Liverpool hero raises Thomas Tuchel concern as new England manager confirmed

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann believes some England fans could have an issue with Thomas Tuchel's nationality after it was confirmed that the former Chelsea manager will be Gareth Southgate's replacement with the national team.

Southgate stepped down from his role as England manager following the European Championship final defeat by Spain, with Lee Carsley placed in interim charge. Carsley has won three of his four games in charge - and will remain in the role for the November international break - but was not outwardly optimistic about the prospect of taking the job on a full-time basis.

The English FA was said to favor a move for Pep Guardiola, who could yet leave Manchester City at the end of this season, but the Tuchel speculation gathered pace extraordinarily quickly, and he was confirmed as England's new manager on Wednesday.

Tuchel's compatriot, Hamann, who played 59 times for Germany and reached a World Cup final in 2002, believes the former PSG manager has what it takes to succeed in the role, but raised doubts over whether supporters will accept him due to his nationality.

"I noticed it and of course I am following it and some English people, some former English international players, have expressed themselves very critically," Hamann told wettbasis.com. "From a professional point of view, I absolutely trust him to do it, he has a great status in England and I understand why they are looking at him.

"The only question will be how the public feels about a German coaching England. I know that the English are very fair sportsmen, but whether they will accept a German as national coach - even if it is Thomas Tuchel, who, as mentioned, has a very, very high status - is not to be underestimated. I am now excited to see how this develops.

Tuchel has signed an 18-month contract with the national team which will begin at the start of 2025 and end after the 2026 World Cup. Speaking as his appointment was confirmed, Tuchel said: "I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.

"Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together."
