Enzo Maresca's 'almost impossible' Liverpool claim is mature take after Chelsea defeat

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes it is inevitable Liverpool will always get chances at Anfield and refused to comment on referee John Brooks' decisions.

The Blues suffered a narrow loss at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, even though they had more possession in a tightly contested match. Curtis Jones netted the winning goal at the 51-minute mark, shortly after Nicolas Jackson equalized Mohamed Salah's first-half penalty.

Despite the performance of his Blues, who are already trailing leaders Liverpool by seven points in the early Premier League standings, Maresca was pleased.

"I think the performance was very good," said the Chelsea boss. "We don't like to drop points but if you have to decide the way to drop points..."

"I've been here many times and I've seen that coming here to play Liverpool is not easy. Although we controlled the game for the most part and dominated, we lost. We are not happy. We don't like it. But the performance on and off the ball was very good.

"We conceded two goals. The first is a penalty which can happen. The second goal in the way we conceded it, we told the boys that by defending like that we have avoided five or six goals doing that already this season but sometimes we will concede like that.

Referee Brooks was at the center of controversy with a series of contentious decisions that left fans from both camps fuming. He initially awarded and then rescinded a Liverpool penalty, having previously dismissed Chelsea's appeals for a spot-kick when Trent Alexander-Arnold clashed with Jadon Sancho.

Maresca shared his mixed feelings: "I'm not happy because we lost, but I'm happy because of the performance of the team." On the refereeing, he added: "The decisions from the referee were clear for you (the media) and me but the referee is there to take the decision. Sometimes they are right and sometimes they are wrong."
