Jamie Carragher takes aim at 'scared' Chelsea player over role in Liverpool defeat

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea must sign a new goalkeeper after criticizing Robert Sanchez following Liverpool's 2-1 win over the Blues.

Arne Slot's side returned to the top of the Premier League on Sunday thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones. Sanchez came in for criticism for how he dealt with Jones' winner, with the Spaniard seemingly hesitant to put his body on the line to prevent the Liverpool midfielder from scoring.

Ghosting into the box, Jones got onto the end of a wonderful cross from Salah, taking a touch with his left before dinking the ball over Sanchez with his right.

It was a brilliant goal from Jones, but it was also poorly dealt with by Sanchez. And speaking after the game, Carragher labeled the Chelsea shot stopper as being "scared of the ball", adding Enzo Maresca's side need a new goalkeeper.

Carragher said: "What I don't like, is that when he goes, he's turning his face. It's almost like he's scared of being hit by the ball. You go back to Peter Schmeichel, when he'd come out, he'd just make himself as big as possible. He comes out to Curtis Jones, Curtis Jones should be absolutely terrified that a keeper's coming towards me, he's 6ft4.

Liverpool.com says: "It seems astonishing Chelsea need a new goalkeeper given the money they've spent on them in recent transfer windows. They have Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Marcus Bettinelli and Lucas Bergstrom all on their books in Maresca's first team squad, with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Dorde Petrovic and Gabriel Slonina all out on-loan at Bournemouth, Strasbourg and Barnsley respectively.

"If you combine the fees Chelsea spent on Kepa, Slonina, Sanchez, Petrovic, Jorgensen and Edouard Mendy, who moved to Saudi Arabia back in 2023, the Blues have shelled out a whopping $209m (PS161m) on goalkeepers over the last six years - which is frankly astonishing given they don't currently have a top class goalkeeper in their ranks."
