Report: Chelsea now want to sign giant 6ft 4in centre-back who admits he idolises Thiago Silva

Chelsea now want to sign Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta as Mauricio Pochettino targets defensive reinforcements.

That is according to FC Inter News in Italy.

However - if the Blues are to sign Scalvini - they must fend off some of Europe's best sides.

What's the story? Well, Inter Milan, Napoli, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Newcastle are also interested in signing the Italy international this summer.

FC Inter News believe Atalanta have placed a EUR40m (PS35m) price tag on their No.42's head this summer.

Inter Milan are said to view Scalvini as the ideal replacement for Milan Skriniar - who is heading to PSG - although the Italian giants would not be able to compete with the likes of Chelsea from a financial aspect.

The Italian news outlet add that Atalanta are also considering keeping the giant 6ft 4in centre-back this summer as they expect his value to increase next season, when he is likely to be showcasing his talents in Europe.

FC Inter News add that the Chelsea target has been offered a pay rise taking his current salary up to EUR1m-a-season (PS868,826) but he knows there is an opportunity to receive a lot more in the Premier League.

Scalvini has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals while also providing two assists.

Thiago Silva can help Chelsea sign Giorgio Scalvini Interestingly, Chelsea have a secret weapon in the race to sign Scalvini - Thiago Silva.

The 19-year-old wonderkid has previously admitted to idolising the Brazil international, so he could be tempted to move to Stamford Bridge should Chelsea arrange a meeting between the pair.

Scalvini told L'Eco di Bergamo: "I have always felt more of a defender. My idol has always been Thiago Silva."

According to The Times, Chelsea arranged for Silva to meet Endrick as they tried to beat Real Madrid to the Palmeiras wonderkid, so the Blues are no strangers to using their biggest players as transfer bait.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Chelsea target defensive reinforcements.
