A very proud career moment surely awaits 'sensational' £10k-a-week Wolves star this week - opinion

Wolves have been brilliant over the past six weeks or so, and the integration of Toti Gomes has been key to the renaissance.

Wanderers had a tricky start to the new season, but have bounced back to move up to 12th in the table, with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend leaving fans overjoyed.

It was clear that Wolves were conceding goals too easily earlier in the season. Craig Dawson and Max Kilman weren't quite showing the form they did under Julen Lopetegui.

When Manchester City rocked up at Molineux on September 30, Gary O'Neil decided to change things up. He went to a back five, adding Toti to the backline.

That proved to be an inspired decision, and Toti has started every Premier League game since.

His impact has been undeniable, with Wolves having lost just once in the league since he came into the side - and if there is any justice, he will now finally make his Portugal debut this week.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

But Wolves may not have had the upturn they've had without Toti.

O'Neil decided to give him a chance against City and he was excellent against the Premier League champions that day.

Toti's level has not dropped since, and he has deserved to remain in the starting XI. He looks really comfortable operating on the left side.

When Wolves are out of possession he tucks in and it becomes a three. When Wolves have the ball, he almost becomes a left-back with Rayan Ait-Nouri pushing high.

The role really seems to suit him and it is allowing him to shine.

It hasn't just been all about the defending either with Toti. Against Newcastle, he showed real flair with his assist for Hwang's goal, prompting Conor Coady to brand him 'sensational' after the game.

Quite possibly, his fine form at Wolves of late could now lead to a very proud career moment this week.

Toti has once again been called up into the senior Portugal squad for the upcoming games against Liechtenstein and Iceland.

Portugal have already sealed qualification to the finals of Euro 2024, and these games are perhaps an opportunity for Roberto Martinez to take a look at some of the players on the fringes.

The PS10,000-a-week man has made the last couple of squads, but is yet to see any minutes.

But he's a player who's been on Martinez's radar. The Spaniard said of Toti earlier this year that he had had 'some good matches at Wolves' and that he had an 'interesting profile'.

An international debut would be nothing less than Toti deserves at this point.
