Matchday Memories: Today In 1968 : Blues’ Ozzie Sinks City In The Rain
Source: Coventry

CCFC's Manager, Noel CantwellThis day (10th September) in 1968 saw the Sky Blues, under manager Noel Cantwell, go down to defeat in heavy rain and a quagmire at Highfield Road against Chelsea in the club's seventh Division One game of the season in only their second season in the top flight.

A back pass from CCFC's warhorse of a central defender Maurice Setters got stuck in the mud allowing Peter Osgood to run onto it and slot past our 'keeper Bill Glazier in the eighteenth minute of an epic game.

This was deeply disappointing given the Sky Blues had won two and drawn one of their last three matches!City had 21 shots but were unable to find a way past Peter Bonetti in the Chelsea goal.

A crowd of 36,217 witnessed one of the great games played at CCFC's old stadium.

Maurice in the Sky BlueSky Blues side that night were:-Bill Glazier, Mick Coop, Chris Cattlin, Ernie Machin*, Maurice Setters*, Brian Hill*, Ernie Hunt*, John Tudor, Gerry Baker* (sub.

Willie Carr), Ian Gibson* and David Clements(*sadly these six Sky Blue stars are no longer with us).

We are pleased to say that all of that team later became members of CCFPA.

Chelsea's men lined up:-Peter Bonetti, Marvin Hinton, Eddie McCreadie, John Hollins, David Webb, John Boyle, Tommy Baldwin, Bobby Tambling, Peter Osgood, Alan Birchenall and Charlie Cooke Referee:- G.

SingletonFuture Sky Blue 'gaffer' Dave Sexton was in charge of the Blues at this time in a perhaps fortunate win over the Sky Blues (they went on to do the double over us at Stamford Bridge besting us by the odd goal in three in March 1969).
