Jean-Philippe Mateta's appearance for Crystal Palace this weekend showed that perhaps its best for all parties if he leaves in the January transfer window.

He was a second-half substitute and made no impact on the game.

So, why is it best for Crystal Palace to part ways with Jean-Philippe Mateta in January? Let's take a look...

What's the story? Crystal Palace played Everton on the weekend at Selhurst Park and it was a poor defensive performance as they lost 3-2.

The Eagles dominated possession but just couldn't create enough clear-cut chances to get the win on the day.

There were some top performances, with Jefferson Lerma no doubt one of the best players on the pitch, but Mateta's appearance had the opposite effect to what manager Roy Hodgson would have wanted.

The French forward came on and in his 16 minute appearance he only managed two touches, which were simple passes to a team mate, via SofaScore.

Crystal Palace and Jean-Phillipe Mateta should part ways in January Mateta came on with the score at 2-2 and was brought on to add some attacking energy to a tired attacking line.

Sadly, he did the opposite and when Palace conceded, he was not able to make an impact to get the equaliser.

Two touches in 16 minutes is not good enough but the 26-year-old is the only attacking alternative to bring on for Odsonne Edouard at this current time. To have one touch every eight minutes when he was on the pitch emphasises that he was just a passenger during the game.

The lack of squad depth has been an issue but over the summer transfer window, Mateta, who Palace signed for PS9m, was linked with a move away.

This would benefit all parties as Mateta could go somewhere where he could play more football and perhaps at a level more suited to him. Meanwhile, the Eagles will get some money for him and then be able to use that on an upgrade.
