Liam Rosenior was full of praise for his Hull City side after their battling 1-0 win over play-off rivals Preston North End in front of a capacity MKM Stadium crowd.

Jaden Philogene's fizzing strike midway through the second half was enough to see the Tigers earn a deserved victory and end their five-game winless home run. The result backed up Wednesday night's 2-0 success at Birmingham City.

The Tigers returned to the top six with a victory that could have been made more comfortable had Philogene taken advantage of a glorious opening on the stroke of half-time when he fluffed a chance when through on goal.

City played well in parts and were good value for their 68th-minute lead but had to withstand some late pressure and a strong penalty shout which was waved away by substitute referee Martin Woods.

"It's a big three points," Rosenior told Hull Live. "We showed different sides to our game today with things we've been working on. Being more resilient, being more organised, harder to beat and I think all of those things came into play in the last 10 minutes of the game.

"For 80 minutes we completely controlled the game, we dominated the game and again, if we're more ruthless in the final third then we don't need to show that side of our game in the last 10 minutes."

Rosenior admitted Philogene was down at the break after passing up a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring on the cusp of the interval, but says his star man responded brilliantly to rattle in the winning goal, his second in as many games having netted on Wednesday night.

"Yes, I was (shouting shoot at Philogene) but that's the learning of a young player," he said. "He was so disappointed in the dressing room afterwards (at half-time) but we all got around him as a group and said to him the next one will go in.

"The next one didn't go in because the goalkeeper made a great save but he saved his best til last. It was an unbelievable individual goal and that's what he's capable of. All in all, it was a really pleasing day."
