Ben Brereton-Diaz would be a great January target for Hull City says top pundit

Former Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest striker Ben Brereton-Diaz would be a fine addition to Hull City's promotion-chasing squad in the January transfer window, according to one pundit.

Sky Sports presenter David Prutton believes a player like Brereton-Diaz would represent a smart piece of business for the Tigers, should Villarreal opt to allow the 24-year-old an early return to England.

The Chile international joined the Spanish La Liga club in the summer after leaving Ewood Park with a decent record of 47 goals in 177 outings following his PS7m move from the City Ground but has struggled to pin down regular football, with reports suggesting he could be a target for English clubs in January.

Sunday's seven-minute cameo in a 3-1 defeat at Atletico Madrid was just the 12th appearance of the season in Spain, where he's yet to score.

While there is no suggestion at this stage that Brereton-Diaz is a target for City, Prutton told the 1904 Club podcast that a player with a similar profile would be ideally suited to adding more firepower to Liam Rosenior's squad.

"I like the Brereton-Diaz one," Prutton said. "It's gone very quickly - I won't say sour because I don't know the ins and outs of what his move over there has entailed, come the end of his time at Blackburn when everyone knew that he was going and Blackburn's season meandered to a close, his effectiveness on that side had waned somewhat - potentially, that was human nature given he knew what was coming.

"The player that he can be whether that's playing out in the wider parts of the pitch or down the centre would really fit with what City are doing. There are similarities to Liam (Delap) even though he's a lot further down the line. He's not as old as you think because he's been around for such a long time, you think he's on the door of knocking 30 and beyond.

"There's still a hell of a lot of games left in that player and it's just whether the perception of what he does with his career in his next move he's bothered by.

"If you were at Blackburn, flirted with the play-offs, didn't quite make it and then you go abroad and you come back to Hull City, what does - and I'm not saying it matters one iota - what does the person in the street judge that move to be? You've gone there, it's failed and you've gone back down sideways down to Hull City, and I mean that with the greatest of respect to both Blackburn and City.

"If it was a case of coming to play for Liam (Rosenior) for four months between now and the end of the season in January, it's one of those where you kind of say it and it feels out of left field but the more you think about it the more it really, really fits.

"We're now making the decision on behalf of Ben to come and play for Hull City which I totally get is a bit of a leap. I could absolutely see him playing in that City side and having that bit more experience to impart to those around him."
