Leon Osman believes there is still a "grey area" surrounding penalties after controversy as Everton beat Ipswich 2-0 at Portman Road.

There was a coming together between Jack Clarke and Dwight McNeil in the Premier League on 19 October, but Michael Oliver's decision to award a penalty was reversed after a VAR check.

McNeil came in between the ball and the opposition player, and Osman believes that Clarke was the one who initiated contact in the situation.

"The defender has stepped in the middle of the ball and the striker, in the middle of the run really," he said [BBC Sport, 15:48].

"Jack Clarke initiated the contact, he kicked Dwight McNeil and then went to ground, but McNeil positioned himself between the forward and the ball.

"It is a bit of a grey area and is all about the referee's opinion."

Penalty controversy again at Everton While some might argue Everton were let off the hook, a similar incident between Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dan Burn didn't go in their favour in the draw against Newcastle United.

Sean Dyche's team haven't received a penalty all season despite some questionable fouls, in what will surprise absolutely nobody in blue.

Everton Former Everton star Leon Osman. After a very slow start in the Premier League, it looked like another season fighting off that threat of relegation, but things are turning around despite a lack of cutting edge.

It's clear that the Toffees need a prolific striker in their ranks, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling with form and Beto has flattered to deceive during his time at the Merseyside outfit.

Thankfully, the penalty decision didn't go against Everton; otherwise, the tide of the game could've changed for the worse.

With Fulham and Southampton coming up next in the Premier League, it is all about carrying on this momentum in some crucial fixtures.
