‘A similar one’: Alan Shearer makes Dominic Calvert-Lewin comparison of Ipswich’s penalty shout vs Everton

Everton recorded the most routine of victories yesterday afternoon, brushing aside Ipswich Town for their first away win in the Premier League in 15 attempts.

It had been a long time coming, and there had been plenty of times when they threatened to achieve that feat before falling flat.

On this occasion though, their opposition simply didn't have enough to trouble them or their lead.

However, it could have been all different had one refereeing decision not gone their way.

Shay Given and Alan Shearer debate Ipswich penalty vs Everton With the scores at 1-0, Jack Clarke swanned into Everton's penalty area with ease, seeking to get his shot away.

However, as the ball came out of his control, he could only stretch hopelessly out, in which Dwight McNeil was allowed to get in between them.

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Shay Given first noted: 'It's good work from Graham Scott in the VAR. It's tricky from Jack Clarke, he gets into the box and there's a tanglement of legs. You can see Michael [Oliver] pointing to the spot, he gave it on the pitch.

'When we slow it down, he kicks the back of Dwight McNeil's leg and I think it's the right decision for Michael Oliver going over to the machine.'

Alan Shearer then made a comparison between that decision and the controversial flashpoint from Everton's match with Newcastle United: 'Everton had a similar one a couple of weeks ago at Newcastle wasn't it? Dan Burn.'

VAR shows consistency for Everton Although their last match against Newcastle United saw widespread controversy, after Calvert-Lewin was denied a similar penalty for striking the back of Dan Burn's leg, it's ironic that the same has now happened here for the opposition.

However, so many times in the past has it felt like Everton were being treated differently in the Premier League, with one crime meriting a certain level of punishment, yet when it came to them, they were not given that benefit.

Whether it be punishing them by giving away a penalty, or refusing to administer one despite having seen the exact same action earn a foul earlier in the season, the Toffees seldom receive luck in this instance.

However, for all the complaints and protestations after their most recent Premier League match against Newcastle United, it's at least refreshing to see VAR maintain a little consistency by maintaining their position.

After all, they have once again stated that Clarke, just as Calvert-Lewin did, kicked the back of an opposition man.

Fortunately, it would not have mattered, with Everton fans chanting Michael Keane's name at full-time after he swiftly scored the second.
