Kevin Thomson on Martin Boyle Hibs advice after winger 'didn't want Dundee exit'

Kevin Thomson has recalled the part he had to play in convincing Martin Boyle to leave Dundee for Hibs.

Boyle moved to Easter Road on an initial loan stint back in 2015 and impressed so much during his stay that the club opted to make the switch permanent. It was not a transfer move Boyle was particularly excited about, early doors anyway, as he looked for advice from Thommo before making any sort of decision.

The former Hibs and Rangers midfielder remembers speaking with the Australia international in the shower at Dens when he was asked about his teammate's future and what he should look to do.

"He put me on the spot. He said: 'I've maybe got a wee squeak to go to the Hibees.' I just washed the shampoo off my face, looked at him and said: 'Go.' He wasn't really playing at Dundee, was he?"

Host Si Ferry laughed: "I was sitting next to him every week on the bench!" before Thomson applauded Boyle for coming on leaps and bounds since then. He added: "He was in and out a wee bit. But he's got blistering pace, he's really effective and he's really kicked on.

"[Boyle] used to do my head in when I was at Dundee and I used to receive the ball, I'd want to flick it into that wee space for him to run, but he'd then come to the ball.

"He's definitely got better, hasn't he? I was gutted to see him go. We didn't dominate games all the time, so when you went to the tougher venues, that speed coming off the bench, it helped people like myself."
