Cody Gakpo gushes over ex-Man Utd player mocked at Old Trafford but beloved by Netherlands fans
Source:Liverpool.com -

Cody Gakpo has been on fire for the Netherlands during Euro 2024, although the Liverpool star reserved some special praise for a former Manchester United flop.

Gakpo was once again hugely influential as his country reached the semi-finals in Germany, having had to come from behind against Turkey after Samet Akaydin's first-half opener.

Stefan de Vrij found an equalizer with 20 minutes remaining, before Gakpo sneaked in at the back post to pressure Mert Muldur into bundling the ball into his own net. The Liverpool forward might not have got his goal, but he remains the tournament's joint-top scorer, and will be the favorite to lift the Golden Boot.

It's not Gakpo though that is receiving many of the plaudits from the Dutch fans. Instead, it's former United striker Wout Weghorst who is being celebrated, having made a big impact after coming off the bench at the break.

Gakpo was among those to share his admiration for his teammate, saying after the game: "Wout brings what Wout always brings.

"He brings a lot of energy, passion and fight. He is very important in that. He gives us an extra percentage, although we also want to achieve that without Wout.

"He is dangerous with his head in the box and we started playing a bit more opportunistically. The opponent runs further back and better spaces are created by him, so that we can make better actions."

Up next for Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk is a semi-final meeting with England, which of course means them coming up against Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez.

Liverpool.com says: Weghorst is one of those strange players that seems to come alive for his country, and even look more dangerous than he does at club level. Still, his form shouldn't be a distraction from how well Gakpo is performing at the moment.

He might have had the goal that would have taken him clear in the Golden Boot standings for the tournament taken away from him, but it has been a really impressive few weeks for him, and considering a lot of the big stars aren't really performing, he might be in with a shout for player of the tournament. Take note Arne Slot, as those performances have all come with him playing on the left.
