Working in Italy, Iling-Junior exit and Liverpool warning – Unai Emery’s Bologna press…
Source:Birmingham Live

Unai Emery sat down with the media at Bodymoor Heath on this afternoon ahead of Aston Villa's Champions League clash against Bologna at Villa Park on Tuesday night (8pm kick-off).

Villa are searching for their third successive win in the competition after beating BSC Young Boys and Bayern Munich. Here's every word he said in his pre-match press conference...

What is the key to remaining so consistent?

"It's a challenge every day, every game. We started after the break and it was very important winning at Fulham. The last two matches before the break we drew and it wasn't enough. We started well and we played before the break very well in the Champions League and won two games but to get the balance is the most important. After the win at Fulham, tomorrow is the new challenge to try to keep the same mentality, performance and preparation for the match. It will be very difficult but this is the challenge hopefully we can get it."

How important is it to have lots of players back?

"Very important. We can have more options in the staring XI with the players. They are fit, getting good performances with the team, it's the most important. Now we have to be intelligent and prepare well to try to help ourselves on the field. It's hard to be consistent for 90 minutes and sometimes my experience make me be clinical, asking the players how they can be consistent physically and mentally at the level we are.

"We have to keep same level as last year in the Premier League and same level we can have in the Champions League. Champions League is more demanding than the Conference League. I'm proud of the work we are doing but each day every day the players' response in training is very important."

How much will you rotate in the coming weeks?

"It's not rotation. I am only thinking how tomorrow I can get the best performance. Some players can have some risk to be injured ... when you are playing important matches, the players want to be ready and hide in case they can have some small pain. This is the most important.

"The players have to be honest and myself now it's very important how we prepare the game tomorrow but at the beginning it's about how the players are after Saturday, and then I will decide for tomorrow. The priority is Premier League and then secondly Champions League to try to compete and get our way and be protagonists there. We have started in this way but tomorrow is a new challenge.

"When we played Young Boys, it was Tuesday after a Saturday and we got very good performances. I have to get the best information from the medical staff and the players, and then I prepare the match tactically, competing and adapting to them."

What do you make of Bologna and why did Iling-Junior go out on loan?

"They are being successful in the last years. They are a team with a huge history in Italy. Last year they played fantastic with Motta, new coach was successful with Fiorentina playing last two Conference League finals. When we analyse them they keep the same players and more or less the same successful way. They are not winning easy matches as they are drawing more but they deserve more points than now. They played fantastic match against Liverpool.

"Tomorrow for them, they have only one point, it will be a very difficult match for us because they will push to get a point. It's the third round of matches but they need points as we do. We respect them a lot but we'll try to have the same motivation and feeling with the fans as our last match. Respecting them is the first ay we can do it.

"He [Iling-Junior] is a young player and he needed a plan where he could get more minutes playing at a high level, for him it's an interesting team to get the minutes he'll need. We are following him trying to use the experience he is having to help us in the future."

Have you ever thought of working in Italy?

"No way now. Italy is a very good competition for the clubs and in the past I had sometimes maybe the chance to go there but always I was very happy in the clubs I was. I have respect for the Italian clubs. I don't know in the future but no way now."

"The most important thing is for us how we are increasing our demands and with those getting the objectives we are facing each year. Two years ago we avoided a risk of relegation and even had time to get a position in the Conference League which was amazing in the first seven months we had here.

"Last year we continued our process and we increased a lot our demands, getting the Champions League. The challenge is to get better every day and now how can we keep the same level we have now for a long time. That's the most difficult thing.

"When you achieve an objective at a high level, how can you be demanding and successful in keeping it. That's the idea I have now. The club is in the same way. The players are with the same message I am giving you here. The words I use repeatedly since I arrived here to now is I don't want to waste my time here.

"That's the message for everyone. I don't want you to waste your time here. We are professionals and we can get our best objectives individually and collectively. We want to keep the level we have now, which is the Champions League and add something more like being a contender for a trophy."

Do you feel like you're building something special here?

"We love football, we love our work and to be successful. We want to achieve individually and collectively our objectives. One of them of course is to play in the Champions League. We are there in this moment but I want to keep it for a long time. It is difficult.

"Maybe sometimes you can have some problems but we have to be resilient in case they are coming. We have to be strong in our idea and in our mind, to create a strong mentality to try to break barriers always."

Can a team without super wealth win the Champions League again?

"I have my own experiences in Europe, in the Conference League, Europa League and Champions League. We started playing in this competition, showing our capacity to adapt quickly. Adapting because we are getting individually and collectively the performances this competition demands. We can believe working like we are doing we can keep it. This is the challenge. We are fourth in the Premier League and have two wins in the Champions League. I want it. I want to always be winning more matches than we are losing and trying to work hard to keep it for a long time.

"Each match for me is for me very important how we are deeply preparing and deeply being demanding to beat the opponent and the higher level we are facing. Last year in the Conference League was the first experience with the players at this club. This year in the Champions League. Tomorrow hopefully we can play, showing we can compete. I don't know how far we are going to get but at this moment we are here, in this position in the Premier League and Champions League."
