Newcastle United officials may well have taken note of what Virgil van Dijk said on Sunday.

The Liverpool captain spoke to the media after the Reds' 2-1 win over Chelsea, with Arne Slot's side moving back to the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool's bright start to the season comes at a time when they are facing up to the possibility of losing three of their biggest stars. Van Dijk, Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all in the final years of their contracts, which means they could potentially become free agents in the summer.

Newcastle United are in a similar situation with Callum Wilson, Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff, who are all contracted at St James' Park until 2025.

"I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but I don't know, we will see what happens in the future," he said.

"My very full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else. What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have been started up and we will see.

"I feel very good, physically, mentally and I am having fun. What the future brings I have no idea at the moment, but like I said discussions are ongoing with the right people and when it's time to make a decision or whatever, I think you guys [the media] will know it as well."

How Van Dijk situation could impact Newcastle But what does Van Dijk possibly signing a new contract at Liverpool have to do with Newcastle United? Well, it could help the Magpies in their pursuit of Marc Guehi.

After failing to sign him in the summer, Newcastle could reignite their interest in Guehi in the New Year.

It has been reported that Crystal Palace are resigned to selling Guehi in 2025, as he continues to opt against signing a new contract at Selhurst Park. His deal expires in 2026, which means Palace will need to sell him next year or risk losing him on a free.

But while Newcastle are still keen on the 24-year-old, an approach in January might be put on hold. It is claimed that Newcastle's January priority is to sign a winger, while Sven Botman's looming return to fitness negates the need for someone like Guehi to arrive in the immediate future.

That could see Newcastle postpone their interest in Guehi until the summer, at a time when he could have more suitors.

Liverpool have been linked with Marc Guehi However, Liverpool are less likely to be interested if they have managed to retain the services of their captain.

If Van Dijk were to leave, the Reds would need a centre-back to replace him. Guehi would be an outstanding candidate, as he is a leader who can operate as a left-sided centre-back and a right-sided centre-back.

Danny Murphy actually thought Liverpool would sign Guehi in the summer, but they made no attempt to hijack Newcastle's approach. However, the Daily Mail have reported that Guehi could be a target for Liverpool in 2025, but that might change following Van Dijk's contract admission.

Hopefully he does sign a new contract with Liverpool, which hopefully helps Newcastle finally land Guehi.
