Former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is set to be appointed the new head coach of MLS side Inter Miami where he will link up with former Argentina and Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.

The 40-year-old Reds icon made 139 appearances for Liverpool between 2006 and 2010 before departing for Catalan giants Barcelona.

He formed a formidable midfield trio alongside Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard, but it eventually split when Alonso departed for Real Madrid in 2009.

Mascherano lifted two Champions League titles and five La Liga's during his time in Spain before eventually retiring in Argentina after a brief stint in China.

He has since moved into coaching and after an impressive spell in charge of Argentina's under-20 squad, he's reportedly about to land his first role in club football at Inter Miami.

David Beckham's Florida outfit have been hunting for a new manager following the departure of Gerardo 'Tata' Martino who resigned after guiding them to a MLS-record 74 points in the regular season.

However, the club failed to win the playoffs and were eliminated by Atalanta United in the first round.
