Albert Gudmundsson is now set to sign a new contract with Italian side Genoa despite recent links to Tottenham Hotspur.

That's according to Fabrizio Romano who shared the update on X.

Tottenham were said to be at the front of the queue for Gudmundsson before this update, a player who is now thriving in the Serie A.

The Icelandic international's teammate Kevin Strootman recently called the winger 'devastating', a player he thought was heading to the top.

And whilst Gudmundsson's versatile and creative skill set looked ideal for a manager like Ange Postecoglou, it looks like he'll now be staying put.

Perhaps Gudmundsson's new contract at Genoa could contain a release clause, one that will interest Tottenham, but that's all hypothetical for now.

However, one thing that is for sure, Postecoglou needs additions to his squad as soon as possible.

The manager is still very early in his squad building at Spurs, but that process may now be hastened by some challenging injuries.

Gudmundsson set to sign a new contract at Genoa despite links to Tottenham Micky van de Ven and James Maddison had already become a vital part of Spurs' spine just months into their time with the club.

And with both now missing until the New Year, Tottenham simply don't have the necessary replacements.

Postecoglou is now having to use players who aren't necessarily in his image.

Tottenham are still said to be very interested in Brighton Hove Albion's Evan Ferguson, a player seen as a long-term replacement for Harry Kane.

But given the price tag that deal may carry, the challenge for Tottenham in January and beyond is clear.

It may be a disappointment for Tottenham fans to see Gudmundsson set to sign a new contract at Genoa - a player who could be exciting under Postecoglou.

But Spurs will still have plenty of options to pursue, and that search may now be accelerated.
