Former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane has been tipped for a surprise return to the Premier League.

According to a report in the Sunday Mirror, Liverpool have made the Bayern Munich winger their 'top target' to potentially replace Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian is out-of-contract at Anfield in June 2025 and was the subject of big-money bids from Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window.

There is a growing feeling that the winger, who joined Liverpool in 2017, will make the switch to the Gulf nation, leaving Liverpool in need of a replacement.

The 31-year-old has been nothing short of outstanding since returning to England six years ago, plundering almost 200 goals in just north of 300 appearances for Jurgen Klopp's side.

It is reported that the Merseysiders have identified Sane as their preferred replacement for Salah, with the report by the Mirror claiming that they are 'ready to smash' their own transfer record to bring him back to the Premier League.

Liverpool's current record signing is forward Darwin Nunez, who joined the club from Benfica in June 2022 for an eye-watering PS85million.

If Liverpool plan to top that fee by signing Sane, who joined Bayern in July 2020 on a five-year deal, it will be of particular interest to City.

That is because, as reported by the Manchester Evening News at the time, the Blues inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that saw the winger return to Germany.

It means they could be in line for a significant windfall if Liverpool, or indeed any other club, signs the winger for a big-money transfer fee.

There has been talk of Liverpool being willing to spend up to PS100million on the 27-year-old.

Signed from Schalke in 2016, Sane spent four years at the Etihad Stadium, helping City win eight trophies, including two Premier League titles.

He made 135 appearances for the club, scoring 39 goals and registering 46 assists.
