Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag lauded Harry Maguire for "playing the way we want him to play".

Maguire has started in United's last two wins against Brentford and Sheffield United and he was named the man of the match in the latter on Saturday night.

United supporters serenaded Maguire loudly at full-time when he approached the away end and he was also warmly welcomed back by the fans of his former club.

"Harry is playing like we want him to play," Ten Hag said. "Very proactive, out of possession, dominating his opponent, stepping in when necessary, reading the game, good recovery but also in possession, very proactive, stepping in, good passing, vertical passing, good switches. I'm happy with his performance."

Rasmus Hojlund is still without a Premier League goal from five starts ahead of next week's Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Hojlund was replaced by Anthony Martial in the 63rd minute - a move that irked sections of the away following.

The 20-year-old is set to continue up front against his first professional club, Copenhagen, in the Champions League on Tuesday evening and the Dane has three goals in two starts in Europe.

Ten Hag admitted United are still managing Hojlund's minutes after he joined the club with a fracture of the back. "You see he plays often whole games but behind us we have to manage his game minutes.

"Coming up are many games. So we are now in October but until the end of the season there are so many games and we need everyone on board, we need everyone sharp and to keep them sharp.

"If I saw the programme for the coming weeks, we have to swap during games, between games, otherwise we don't keep the energy, we don't keep the focus in the team and we don't get them so fresh for every game.

"Also, we want to do something with subs to bring a new energy into the team and from a tactical approach we want to do something."
