NUFC’s Leading 4mos ago
By a process of elimination that leaves Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City above Newcastle United
Source:NUFC’s Leading

Now we are in between seasons, we wanted to get a Newcastle United fans snapshot of opinion.

The idea is to get a range of views of what various Mag writers (Newcastle United fans) think about what has happened and the current position.

Then most importantly, what is going to happen at Newcastle United moving forward.

So we have sent various regular and irregular contributors sets of questions, including some the same as others, some different.

Next up we have Barry Paul Henry:

Three words to describe Newcastle United now?

A dark horse.

Hand on heart, where do you think Newcastle will finish in the 2024/25 Premier League?

Top three or four.

I think we will be above Man U, Villa, Spurs and Chelsea, so by process of elimination, that leaves Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal.

The three most improved NUFC players as we look forward to the 2024/25 season?

Anthony Gordon, easily.

My boy Alexander Isak I'd say, after him .

The third most improved?

A difficult one. Schar and Bruno had good strong seasons again but I don't know if they've improved as such . It's been an injury hit campaign, but I'll go for young Elliot Anderson as a player I feel that's improved. He was coming on leaps and bounds at the start of the season before getting a bad back injury and he did make a difference I feel when he came into the team towards the end of the season.

A must win game and the whole current squad fit (not banned) and available, which 11 would you select?

I'm not sure what is the strongest eleven exactly.

The strongest team isn't necessarily the best eleven individuals.

The team I'd like to see tried out if they are all fit and ready to go, going off how they've been for us, not other clubs:

Pope, Hall, Botman, Schar, Livramento, Bruno, Longstaff, Willock, Joelinton, Isak and Gordon.

I haven't seen enough of Tonali in a newcastle shirt yet and the same goes for Harvey Barnes.

Until I see them play more, that's the team as far as I'm concerned, that's proven and tested in black and white as midfield and attack goes.

Your thoughts on each of the signings made in 2023 and how you see their role (if any), their importance (or not) for the 2024/25 season - Gordon, Minteh, Livramento, Hall, Tonali, Barnes

Gordon is a big player and Is key for next season.

Minteh is someone with potential and it's too early to make a fair judgment on him.

Lewis Hall is a very good technician and will continue to improve. Its worth remembering he's originally a midfielder and still a teenager.

Lewis Hall Newcastle Goal Manchester UnitedTonali, again it's too early to judge him as a Newcastle player. I don't care about his reputation at AC Milan.

Barnes. A big reputation from playing at Leicester and a seasoned PL performer , he's shown good signs but I'd like to see him fit first and utmost to judge his all round game.

Is it still a Premier League big six, or is it seven (incl NUFC), or is it an eight (incl NUFC and Villa)?

There is no such thing as a big six or eight in my book.

What do you think should happen with VAR, what changes or get rid of altogether?

The problem I feel is the operators. Plus I feel the rules aren't clear enough the way they're interpreted.

I'd also suggest using the system with tight offsides like we saw at the World Cup than go off some person drawing lines on a screen in a van, somewhere in some car park.

Press a magic button and have a 62,000 capacity enlarged St James' Park in place, or a brand new 80,000 capacity stadium just up the road at Castle Leazes?

I'm not the best person to ask really on the stadium debate.

I've been the once and I'd love to go again one day, but I think it's a better question for someone who's gone to watch the team for a number of years, as they'd have more knowledge on a match day experience and have seen more than I'm ever likely to see in my time.

Next three seasons, would you rather finish top four all three seasons BUT win nothing, or finish mid-table all three seasons AND win the League Cup in one of the three?

I've written a few articles on this debate.

Trophies are far more important in my book as a fan, than some status as a club in the Champions League. No point playing among the elite if there's nothing to show for it. I've used Spurs and Leicester City as prime examples in that sort of debate.

With the summer business you are anticipating, what could NUFC be capable of next season?

I expect a fairly low key summer with some sensible additions like Lloyd Kelly, a decent centre back with a respectable reputation but not someone you'd say is one of the highest rated in the league etc. I think if we are to spend big it will be on an attacking player.

I think though the emphasis will be put on shipping a few players surplus to requirements out, plus I think we will back our initial judgement in Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, among a few others.

I don't think we will buy players for the sake of it.

Would you like to draw Sunderland again in one of the cups this coming season?

Sunderland are irrelevant as far as I'm concerned but as I expect us to hammer them, then why not play them in the cups next season again !

Scale of 1-10, how interested in England at the Euros?#

I'm Welsh! I have no interest in England at the Euros. I will not support them.

I also though will not be desperate to see them beaten and humiliated, unlike some of my countrymen, along with many of the Scots and Irish.

Scale of 1-10, how interested in the Euros generally?

I'll watch the euros as I do miss the football on the weekend. I won't though particularly be supporting anyone at it.

If you could have a totally free choice, which 19 other clubs would you like to have in the Premier League with Newcastle United?

From a selfish perspective, I'd like to see Swansea, Cardiff, Newport and Merthyr Town play in it!

In all seriousness though, I think the vast majority of the teams already in the PL belong there. Leicester and Southampton coming up, belong I think in the top flight.

No disrespect though to Ipswich Town, Brentford and Bournemouth but I think Leeds United belong In the PL instead of one of them. I'd make cases as well for maybe Derby County or Blackburn Rovers if run properly and while many may not agree, I'd say Sunderland would make it more interesting again from a Newcastle United perspective. Derby matches are a big thing for any fan base.
