MORE SPURS STORIES

According to The Times, one of the City's main complaints is that associated party transaction (APT) rules are illegitimate, with the Premier League champions effectively campaigning for sponsorship deals to be omitted from scrutiny.

If the APT rules were to be removed, it would benefit state-owned clubs, who could arrange deals with related state-owned companies at vastly inflated prices.

The three sides, along with a few other clubs, are said to be furious that City's owners are attempting to give the club limitless spending power.

One club source is quoted as saying: "Man City are basically saying they should be able to do what they want. They want to invent a new version of football.

"The really galling thing is their actions are so disingenuous, as they're not challenging the profitability and sustainability rules, which everyone else has to stick to.

"They're not against the spending rules, they're just trying to make sure they don't apply to them."

If the ATP rules are removed and the likes of Newcastle and City are given unlimited spending power, it will be a sad day for the Premier League.

The competition will simply become about who has the richest and most influential owners rather than being based on anything meritocratic.
