Grealish, Haaland, Phillips - How Man City could line up vs Celtic and Barcelona in pre-season
Source:Manchester Evening

With Euro 2024 kicking off on Friday night, all attentions will firmly be on international action in Germany for the next month.

City have more players representing their countries than any other Premier League club, and their transfer business will likely be hampered by the world's best players either at the Euros or the Copa America.

Shortly after the final in Berlin next month, City will return to the City Football Academy to look ahead to next season. However, it's likely that most of their senior players will be enjoying some well-earned time off rather than jetting out to the USA for City's pre-season tour.

As a result, Pep Guardiola's squad to take in four friendlies in the states looks set to be a mix of those players not at the summer tournaments and a number of academy faces looking to impress the manager.

City take on Celtic in North Carolina in 40 days time for their first friendly, before heading to New York to take on AC Milan at the iconic Yankee Stadium. A trip down to Orlando to face Barcelona awaits, before a match-up with Premier League rivals Chelsea in Columbus, Ohio - with the London club now managed by former Blues assistant Enzo Maresca.

A week after that Chelsea clash is the Community Shield vs Manchester United, where some of Guardiola's key men may have returned. A two week tour of the US may have earned some fringe players a spot at Wembley, however, with the best-available starting XI in the states a mix of big names, forgotten faces and promising academy players.

Ederson's injury picked up at Tottenham at the end of the season ruled him out of the Copa America, but he should be available to play in pre-season, and will be first choice goalkeeper. Stefan Ortega signed a new contract last week to end speculation over his own future, ensuring the goalkeeping department will be fully stocked on tour.

In defence, Sergio Gomez could be the most senior player in Guardiola's squad, unless he secures a move away from the club before that. Loanee Issa Kabore could get a chance to impress Guardiola after a productive season at Luton, with academy trio Max Alleyne, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Kian Noble all options at centre-back.

Alleyne was on the bench in the Champions League last season at Red Star and Guardiola expressed regret that he couldn't hand the youngster a debut, while Simpson-Pusey was the Youth Cup winning captain for the under-18s. Noble attracted plenty of attention for his performance in that final, and trained with the senior England team last season to boost numbers.

Any City player knocked out of the Euros at the group stage could potentially feature on tour, with Croatia duo Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic in a tough group, and Manu Akanji of Switzerland not guaranteed to reach the knockout stages, although the safety net of some third-placed finishers could save them.

Rico Lewis is not with England so could play at right-back, or could also be utilised in his preferred midfield positions. Kalvin Phillips appears to have no future at City, but as long as he remains on their books he would travel to the US for pre-season. Guardiola said that Joao Cancelo would be in the summer squad if his future is not resolved, so the same will presumably be true of Phillips. Cancelo is likely to be resting, however, after representing Portugal over the summer.

Into attack, and Jack Grealish is the highest-profile name to be omitted from the Euros having been harshly dropped by England. It will be a big summer for him after his third season at the Etihad was closer in fortunes to his first than his treble-winning second.

Grealish will have a point to prove, not least to Guardiola, and the four friendlies is the first step to improving his situation. Oscar Bobb can get a run-out at number ten after a promising debut season with the senior squad and with Norway not qualifying for the Euros.

James McAtee, impressive during last summer's tour before heading out on loan, will hope to show Guardiola what he can offer after another season at Sheffield United, and can rotate with Bobb between the wing and central areas. Both City and McAtee will have to make the decision of whether to fight for his place at the Etihad or seek another loan move.

In attack, and Erling Haaland should be fit and firing after a summer off. It is a travesty that he is not able to show his quality at the Euros, but City can be the main beneficiaries of that and he will be the star attraction on tour.

Making up the numbers in the squad will be a number of academy faces who have been in and around the first team for some time. Micah Hamilton scored on debut against Red Star last season, with Mahamadou Susoho also making his debut in that game. Jacob Wright debuted in the FA Cup against Huddersfield at the start of the year, while Justin Oboavwoduo and Joel Ndala were in the travelling squad for the Club World Cup campaign in Saudi Arabia in December.

Finland international Tom Galvez has trained with the first team and would be another left-back option, while Goalkeeper True Grant was on the bench at the end of the season in Ederson's absence and could add a fourth keeper to the touring squad. Liam Delap will look for a move away in the transfer window, either on loan or permanently, but could be taken on tour after a productive spell at Hull.

Possible City line up vs Celtic in pre-season: Ederson, Kabore, Alleyne, Simpson-Pusey, Gomez; Phillips, Lewis; McAtee, Bobb, Grealish; Haaland.
