The Manchester City star replaces Jordan Henderson who had served as Harry Kane's deputy since 2018 but did not make the plane to Germany this summer.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Walker was selected having captained his club to a fourth-straight Premier League title this season.

Alongside the likes of Kane and Jordan Pickford, the right-back has been a near ever present in the Three Lions squad under Southgate and is once again set to play a huge part at the Euros which get underway on Friday night.

England kick-off their tournament on Sunday night against Serbia.

Henderson had been expected to continue in his role as vice-captain having done so at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as well as Euro 2020.

However, the former Liverpool skipper did not even make Southgate's preliminary squad having endured a tough campaign after making a controversial transfer to Saudi Pro League Al-Ettifaq last summer.

He has won 83 caps so far and should overtake Manchester United legend Gary Neville as England's most capped right-back during the Euros.

There would surely have been other names in contention to be Kane's vice, including Pickford, Kieran Trippier and Declan Rice.
