The Premier League's spending on legal battles will rise again next season ahead of Manchester City's 115 charges case and any other potential rule breaches.

That is the view of former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there is no way around the "very high" legal and operating costs associated with enforcing the financial fair play (FFP) rules for the governing body.

The Times reported the Premier League spent almost PS30million on legal counsel in actions against top-flight clubs last season.

It comes after Everton were charged with two profit and sustainability (PSR) breaches, while Nottingham Forest were also charged for breaking the spending rules.

The Premier League are currently locked in a legal battle with Man City over the associated party transactions (APT) rules and the English champions are due in court again in November over the 115 charges aimed at them by the governing body.

Premier League costs to increase after Man City case Borson believes the Premier League will need to increase its spending internally to create bigger teams capable of monitoring all of the top-flight clubs' finances.

"It's a meaningful issue for the Premier League," Borson told Football Insider.

"There is no way around the very high legal and operating costs that are associated with it. It won't simply be the external fees that are being paid.

"There will have to be an increase in the internal scale of the financial monitoring function of the Premier League.

"The EFL has done the same and has a specific team of people, who are monitoring the finances of the clubs.

"The Premier League already have that, but they are going to have to expand it.

Man City "As the rules get more complicated, which they have done over the last few years, they are going to need bigger teams of people to deal with it.

"Clearly, if people breach, those cases are going to be complex and costly."
