'He is incredible'.... John Stones backs Manchester City teammate who can offer more

The England squad is overflowing with talent but Gareth Southgate is yet to discover a system to let his best players shine at Euro 2024.

The Three Lions currently sit top of Group C but they have failed to live up to the lofty expectations placed on them before the tournament kicked off.

The optimism around England's hopes were quickly muted after an underwhelming victory over Serbia and a dire draw against Denmark.

Gareth Southgate's side are still on track to top the group and reach the knockout stages when they face Slovakia on Tuesday night, but fans will be looking beyond just the result.

Changes will be expected before England's clash in Cologne on Tuesday and all eyes will be on Phil Foden after he failed to impress from out wide.

Foden has faced criticism over his performances from the left flank and Southgate is now under pressure to get the best out of the Premier League's latest Player of the Year.

Phil Foden should play down the middle for England Foden has been forced onto the left to accommodate Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka playing in their natural positions but, ultimately - it hasn't worked.

England are yet to see the best of the 24-year-old fresh from a remarkable season where he led Manchester City to the Premier League title.

Speaking to talkSPORT, John Stones explained that Foden is at his best in a central role similar to his position at Manchester City.

"I think Phil, personally, loves playing through the middle," Stones said.

"It is a difficult one. I'm glad that I'm not the manager to make those decisions.

"Wherever Phil plays, for me, he is incredible - he is a top player and obviously everyone has their strengths in different positions. Everyone is entitled to their opinions."

Gareth Southgate must play to Phil Foden's strength England have suffered in the past from playing their best players out of position and Southgate is at risk of repeating that mistake.

While Bellingham will be deemed undroppable following his remarkable debut season at Real Madrid, England cannot afford to sacrifice team balance for individuals.

Foden's brightest moments in the Euros have come when he has drifted centrally so he deserves his chance to start there.

With England safe from Euros elimination, Tuesday's match against Slovakia calls for more midfield experimentation.
