One of the top English performers of the last 12 months finally got the chance to make an impact on his national team at a major tournament last night.

Cole Palmer was finally given the chance to make an impact for England at the European Championships after being forced to watch the opening two fixtures from the bench without being brought on.

With his country needing someone to make a difference, he was turned to by Gareth Southgate, who stated after the game he had been impressed with what he saw.

It seems as if a number of his England teammates were impressed with what they saw too. Both Kobbie Mainoo and Phil Foden were quick to take to the comments of Palmer's Instagram post marking his tournament debut.

Club teammate Romeo Lavia was also keen to comment, with the Belgian posting two laughing emojis in the comments, with the meaning behind that being unknown.

It could well be just an inside joke between friends, however a dig at the manager for not featuring him up until then could well also be the motive behind it.

Conor Gallagher struggles for England It remains to be seen if Palmer did enough in his cameo for a start in the Round of 16 game, likely at this stage to be against Netherlands at the weekend.

One Chelsea player who did not have quite so positive an evening was Conor Gallagher, who was brought into the starting side in the only change made by the manager.

He was hooked off at half-time, with it being clear to many before the game even started that he was playing in a role that didn't suit his best abilities.
