Leicester City title-winner makes 'unproven' Enzo Maresca point as Chelsea ask transfer question
Source:Leicestershire Live

One of Leicester City's title-winning legends has questioned Chelsea's decision to appoint Enzo Maresca as their new head coach.

The Italian arrived at the King Power Stadium from Manchester City last summer and led the relegated Foxes back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, before being poached to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester have since reacted by appointing Steve Cooper as their new boss, but Premier League winner Robert Huth reckons the Foxes could yet have the last laugh.

The retired centre-half, who also played for Chelsea earlier in his career, reckons his former club have dumped a top class manager and swapped him for an unproven one.

He told the Gambling.com Euro 2024 panel show: "I certainly liked Pochettino's style - when he was at Southampton and we played against his teams, and when he was at Tottenham (too). They were always really well drilled, well organised, fit and athletic teams.

"I think Chelsea fans were starting to see it towards the end of the season. The last 10 or 15 games, I thought they were excellent. So I was very, very surprised when he (Pochettino) left. And you can probably argue that Maresca is not as good a manager, as of now, as Pochettino is.

"It's a strange one, certainly for the Chelsea fans to get their heads around. Why would you get rid of a top class manager that managed in the Premier League, that managed in France, and had success, for someone that's unproven in the top league.

"Chelsea obviously want to go back to winning Champions Leagues and winning leagues. It just feels like a strange move looking in from the outside."

Huth played 82 times for Leicester after initially arriving on loan from Stoke City, scoring six goals and helping them upset 5,000-1 odds to win the Premier League title in 2015/16. He made his Chelsea debut aged 17 after joining the Londoners from Union Berlin in 2001, and went on to make 19 appearances for the German national team.

As if seeing their promotion-winning manager quit for the Blues, even more galling for Foxes fans will be the news that Chelsea have registered an interest in current player of the season Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The 25-year-old was a key player for Maresca in helping Leicester win promotion, scoring 12 goals and earning 14 assists in the Championship.

According to The Times, Leicester value Dewsbury-Hall, who has three years left on his contract, at PS35m.
