I think Man City could regret missing out on £42m Aston Villa transfer option

After a quiet start to the transfer window, this weekend could see the most high-profile deal of the summer completed.

Admittedly, Kylian Mbappe's move to Real Madrid has been concluded and Endrick has played his final game for Palmeiras before joining the ex-Paris Saint-Germain star in the Spanish capital. But both transfers have been on the cards for months and took no-one by surprise.

Excluding deals pre-arranged last season, the only notable moves involving Europe's premier clubs are Hiroki Ito's switch to Bayern Munich and Aleix Garcia's transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

That could change this weekend when, as expected, Douglas Luiz's transfer from Aston Villa to Juventus is confirmed. The Villans need to raise funds ahead of the 30 June cut off for the Premier League's annual Profit and Sustainability Rules deadline, and the Daily Mail claim Unai Emery's side are set to pocket around PS42m for the transfer.

That has a significant knock-on effect for City who reserve a 20 percent sell-on clause for Luiz, who joined Villa from the Etihad in 2019. While the transfer is complicated with two players - Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea - heading from Juve to Villa, assuming the PS42m fee is correct then City will pocket around PS8.5m from the deal.

That's before the PS20m fee agreed with Southampton for the permanent transfer of Taylor Harwood-Bellis, while City could also earn around PS4m from James Trafford's move to Newcastle United.

While profiting on the former City youth graduates feels like shrewd business, Luiz's transfer is another matter. City, in a sense, could have signed the Brazilian international for around 33.5m, when the 20 percent is deducted. That seems like a bargain for a midfielder who registered double figures for both goals and assists in all competitions last season and started 35 Premier League games for fourth-placed Villa.

In comparison, none of City's midfielders scored more than Luiz's nine league goals and only Rodri's expected goals figures are better when penalties are removed. Luiz also offers a good blend of attacking and defensive qualities and Rodri is the only City midfielder to register more tackles and interceptions last season.

A lack of cover for the Spaniard was an issue in 2023/24, especially given he told reporters in April that he 'needs a rest'. The Kalvin Phillips experiment has spectacularly failed and Luiz, while he differs stylistically to City's no.16, could certainly have added to the options at the base of midfield for a relatively cheap price.

At 26, there's also significant room for development under Guardiola, while Luiz's familiarity with the City set-up and the rigours of Premier League football are bonuses.

Bruno Guimaraes has been identified as a transfer target by Etihad chiefs but they were unwilling to match the PS100m buy-out clause in his contract which has now expired. City could return for the Newcastle United star later this month, but that option will most likely elapse for Luiz. It's a decision they may come to regret.
