Man Utd receive early-season selection boost - but Man City to miss key man as Olympic squads announced
Source:Latest News

The winger is currently at Copa America with the national squad - and selection as part of the Olympics would limit the recovery time of a player who made 50 appearances last season and started the final 38 games of the campaign.

With the Olympics final to be played on 9 August - the day before the Community Shield - Garnacho's involvement would have almost certainly involved him missing the start of the new season. Thankfully, from a United perspective, the attacker should now be available for the opening weeks of the season.

However that's is not the fate of Julian Alvarez. The Manchester City forward was named in Javier Mascherano's final 18-man squad as one of the three overage players, along with Geronimo Rulli and Nicolas Otamendi.

It will mean a bumper schedule for Alvarez who, like Garnacho, is currently with the Argentina squad at Copa America. The final of that competition takes place just 10 days before the Olympics begins, with Mascherano's side playing Morocco, Iraq and Ukraine in the group stage in France.

Alvarez played more games for City than anyone else last season, and will surely be in line for a significant rest after the Olympics. In all likelihood, the 24-year-old may not be seen at club level again until September.

Meanwhile, City youngster Claudio Echeverri has also been included in the squad. The teenager joined the Premier League champions in January but immediately returned to River Plate on loan. Sergio Gomez has also been called up for Spain, City have three players competing at this summer's games in Paris.
