Jose Fonte has claimed that one Manchester City player could go down as one of Portugal's best players in their history.

So far, it would be interesting to enquire Portuguese supporters about whether any one of Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo can be named amongst some of their country's greatest-ever players.

Portugal have produced a whole host of tremendous players. Cristiano Ronaldo is the name that first springs to mind but the likes of Eusebio, Luis Figo, Rui Costa and Deco are others who took the world by storm.

If Roberto Martinez's side win Euro 2024, perhaps Bernardo, Dias and Cancelo will unanimously be considered amongst the aforementioned legends.

MORE MAN CITY STORIES

Bernardo, in particular, having won as many as six Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy in a treble-winning season and several other pieces of silverware at the Etihad Stadium.

The PS43 million man was incredible at AS Monaco as well - arguably being their most important player after Kylian Mbappe as they won Ligue 1 in the 2016/2017 season as they reached the Champions League semi-final.

As Bernardo has had a spectacular career, Jose Fonte named him in his all-time Portugal XI while claiming that he could go down as one of his country's best-ever players.

Fonte told BBC Sport: "Bernardo Silva will be one of the best-ever in Portugal. I think the way he's playing, to how important he is to Manchester City and Pep Guardiola, he's very, very important to Portugal at the moment and I think he will continue to be important for years to come."

Bernardo Silva certainly could go down as a Portuguese great Jose Fonte certainly has a point about Bernardo, as he already has the CV to be regarded as a legend in his country and at just 29 years of age, he still has plenty left to achieve.

It was claimed on Wednesday that the versatile attacker looks likelier to stay than leave City this summer.

With the Sky Blues being best-placed to remain England's dominant force until Pep Guardiola decides to stay at the club, the midfield maestro's influence on the side will remain huge as he will likely add more medals to his trophy cabinet.

If he manages to win silverware at international level as well, Portugal will regard Bernardo as a modern-day legend.
