Man City defender John Stones provides injury update ahead of England v Switzerland

John Stones played down any injury concerns ahead of England's Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday.

The Manchester City defender was seen with heavy strapping on his leg during Wednesday's opening training session, but insisted he'll be fine to start this weekend in Dusseldorf. It's a huge boost for England and Gareth Southgate, especially given centre-back partner Marc Guehi is suspended for the quarter-final tie after picking up two bookings.

Stones is among England's most experienced players - only Harry Kane and Kyle Walker have earned more caps from the current squad, The centre-back is now a veteran of five tournaments and recently set a new joint record of 23 consecutive games at major competitions, with Jordan Pickford.

So his involvement on Saturday will be vital for the Three Lions. "It looks worse, the strapping, than it is. I'm fine, all good," Stones said when asked about the injury concern on Thursday.

There has been speculation that Southgate is set to switch to back three against Switzerland with Ezri Konsa coming in to replace the suspended Guehi, alongside Walker and Stones. The latter said the Aston Villa defender is more than ready to step up if handed his first tournament start this weekend.

"None of us know the exact team or system yet. But whoever plays in whatever partnerships is fully ready. The standards that I've seen have been incredible, so whoever steps in is worthy of being there."

Stones was also asked if he has been in contact with City team-mate and Swiss international Manuel Akanji ahead of Saturday's clash.

"I haven't actually spoken with anyone - it's been a bit of a bubble while we've been here and some days I wake up and I don't know what day of the year it is," he replied.

"You get in your routine of going in the gym, going to training, so no, I've not spoke to him or anyone else. I'm sure Manu's tipping his teammates about me, Walks and Phil, but they've got some great players and I think it will be really good match-up for us and a good test."
