'Advanced': Man City are now behind Tottenham in the race to sign 'mad' £68m player - journalist

It has been reported that Manchester City are trailing behind Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign a certain Premier League player.

While joining Pep Guardiola's side means a player is operating at the pinnacle of English football, Tottenham also have a burgeoning project on their hands.

Spurs' fifth-place finish last season might not make for impressive reading but their style of football and recruitment under Ange Postecoglou has taken major strides.

Simultaneously, Manchester City, alongside Real Madrid are the club a majority of players dream of playing for - as Nottingham Forest defender Murillo admitted earlier this this month.

Heading into the 2024/2025 season, City are expected to be one of the frontrunners to win every single competition once again.

Man City are now behind Tottenham in Eberechi Eze race The Lilywhites, on the other hand will still need to break their 16-year long trophy drought sooner rather than later, as for all the progress they are making on and off the pitch, it will not amount for much if they fail to win even a single piece of silverware during Postecoglou's reign.

Manchester City, on the contrary are a winning machine unlike any team English football has bared witness to and there is no telling when their dominance will end once and for all.

However, players decide to sign for clubs due to a variety of factors.

It has been claimed by journalist Alex Crook on talkSPORT's Premier League All Access podcast that Tottenham are leading the race to sign Eberechi Eze - hailed as a "mad player" by Rio Ferdinand on his official YouTube channel - due to Kevin De Bruyne's future.

"Well, they're keen on [Eberechi] Eze as well, I reported that on the Transfer Notebook a few weeks ago, Tottenham's interest is genuine but they need to shift players on."

"Yeah, I would say at this stage that Tottenham's interest is more advanced in terms of this summer because with City, it would probably depend on [Kevin] De Bruyne leaving and we don't think that will happen this summer, probably more likely next [summer]."

It was claimed on Monday that City were targeting Eze, who is valued at PS68 million to replace De Bruyne if he left the club for a move to the Saudi Pro League in the summer.

Man City no longer need Eze due to latest De Bruyne update Pep Guardiola confirmed that De Bruyne is set to stay at Manchester City this season - which means the club no longer even need to consider Eze as a potential replacement for him.

If the Belgian had decided to leave the Etihad Stadium, the rationale behind targeting another attacking midfielder would have made complete sense.

However, Manchester City are already well-stocked in that department, with De Bruyne and Foden heading into the following campaign as their primary attacking midfield duo, with Oscar Bobb also capable of playing in such a role.

Tottenham, however, only have James Maddison as an established natural number 10 in their ranks and as a result, it would come as no surprise if their interest in Eze is more serious than that of City's.
