The future of a key Manchester City player could become more clear in the coming weeks.

The starting XI chosen by Pep Guardiola on Wednesday, in Manchester City's first pre-season game of the summer, won't provide too many hints of his plans for the upcoming campaign.

With 16 players missing for the clash against Celtic in North Carolina, the City line-up will be made up of a handful of experienced first-teamers alongside youth-team protegees.

Defence is looking like a particularly tricky area to navigate with just one senior option in Rico Lewis, while a potential midfield of Maximo Perrone, Kalvin Phillips and James McAtee is far from a recognised trio.

But there is one position where Guardiola has all of his regular choices available, with his three senior goalkeepers travelling to the US for the four pre-season matches against Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea.

Ederson, Stefan Ortega and Scott Carson are all likely to get some game time in America and, by the end of the pre-season friendlies, there could be a clear indication of who the no.1 will be for the upcoming campaign.

Ederson has been the undisputed first choice for the last seven years at City, but the 2023/24 was perhaps his most underwhelming campaign so far in Manchester. That was as much due to injury than performance, with four separate issues in the second half of last season, which finished with the Brazilian watching from the sidelines due to a fractured eye socket.

In his absence, it was Ortega who made a potentially title-winning save at Tottenham Hotspur and then played in the FA Cup final. Amid a cryptic social media post and speculation that Ederson was set to sign for a Saudi Arabian side, Guardiola moved - unprompted - to praise the 30-year-old at the end of last season.

"Eddy has done it many times before," said the City manager. "[Do you] know why we won the Champions League? Ederson made incredible saves at 1-0. And against [Karim] Benzema [in the semi-final]. He was the key to win. We cannot define this period without Eddy."

Guardiola stated in both April and May that Ederson remains his no.1, but be might be forced into a rethink. A new contract for Ortega over the summer and recurring reports about Ederson's futures means that, for the first time as a Premier League-winning manager, Guardiola may be forced into a significant change between the sticks.

The Celtic game alone is unlikely to prove City's plans in this particular area, given both are expected to play some in North Carolina, but by the time the full-whistle is blown against Chelsea on 4 August, it's likely either Ederson or Ortega will have emerged as the clear first choice.
