Ederson Moraes emerged as Manchester City's hero as they beat Manchester United in the FA Community Shield, courtesy of a 7-6 win during a penalty shootout.
After Bernardo Silva's last-gasp equaliser cancelled Alejandro Garnacho's opener out, all eyes were on Ederson to see whether he could help City seal the victory.
As Bernardo missed his spot-kick and the Brazilian failed to keep Diogo Dalot's effort out despite getting two hands on it, it seemed like Manchester United were set to get over the line.
However, the Manchester City goalkeeper managed to save Jadon Sancho's eventual penalty, keeping his side in the game.
Eventually, the 30-year-old was tasked with converting from the penalty spot -as he did, coolly slotting the ball into the back of the net after sending Andre Onana to the wrong side.
Manuel Akanji claimed Ederson is City's best penalty-taker after the contest as well.
But coming into the clash, his as a Manchester City player was uncertain as Pep Guardiola revealed he would let Ederson leave the club this summer if he expressed a desire to do so.
MORE MAN CITY STORIESAs a result, it would not have been far-fetched to consider whether he had played his final game in a City shirt.
For any club, it is ideal if a player confirms where his future lies before the Community Shield.
But that was not the case in the six-time Premier League winner's case.
However, Ederson told ESPN Brasil journalist Joao Castelo-Branco after Manchester City beat Manchester United that he has decided to stay at the Etihad Stadium.
"It's over.
I spoke with some players, the coach, director, everyone.
I talked to my family and it was a joint decision.
We'll stay more years at City.
""The media says many things, sometimes inventing a little more.
But I've already decided my future, especially after the conversation I had with [Pep] Guardiola.
This season, I'm totally focused at City with my teammates in search of more titles.
"Incredible news for Man City that Ederson is staying Pep Guardiola and all the other senior figures at Manchester City will be delighted that Ederson has decided to stay at the club.
Having one of the best goalkeepers in the world and a leader in the dressing room decide not to put an end to his seven-year spell would be incredible news for any club in the world.
In the Community Shield, Ederson showcased his quality, aside from his heroics in the penalty shootout by spraying sublime passes for his teammates to get on to throughout the clash.
The decorated goalkeeper still has plenty of years left in the tank and as City gear up for a campaign where they have plenty of silverware in sight, his presence will only make their goals seem more achievable.
After his exploits in the Manchester Derby, Ederson will likely be motivated to have yet another brilliant season in a Manchester City shirt.
