Manchester City finally broke their recent hoodoo of losing three successive outings in the FA Community Shield by beating Manchester United on penalties.

It seemed like recent history was set to repeat itself after Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring for Erik ten Hag's side in the 82nd minute.

However, Oscar Bobb managed to create a moment of magic by turning past Lisandro Martinez and delivering a pinpoint cross into the box for Bernardo Silva - who headed the ball into the back of the net in the 89th minute.

As the game went straight to a penalty shootout, Manuel Akanji sealed City's 7-6 victory on spot-kicks by blasting his effort from 12 yards out down the middle.

But if not for Bobb's brilliance on the right-wing, Manchester City could well have succumbed to their second consecutive defeat at the hands of Manchester United at Wembley Stadium after the FA Cup final in May.

Guardiola raves about Man City wonderkid after beating Manchester United The PS50,000-a-week man shone after his scintillating displays in pre-season were rewarded by Pep Guardiola with a start in the Manchester Derby.

The statistics paint a picture of how influential Bobb was on Saturday - with five touches in the opposition box, four crosses, winning possession four times, three chances creates, one shot and one assist - as per Squawka Live.

The Norwegian international emerged as City's brightest spark in a contest that ebbed and flowed for both sides who had plenty of chances to kill the game off.

Graeme Souness once praised Bobb as a "fabulous" player and he well and truly lived up to the billing.

Pep Guardiola had plenty to say about the youngster after taking home his first trophy of the 2024/2025 season after Manchester City defeated Manchester United in the Community Shield.

Guardiola initially said via HaytersTV: "Oscar [Bobb] made a fantastic game, like all pre-season.

"When quizzed about whether the versatile attacker has grown in confidence in the past six months, the Catalan insisted that he still wishes for him to be more fearless in the final third.

"We want more.

I think in the actions, in the final third, he has to do [a more direct action] more regularly.

Sometimes, he has the chance to take the ball and go and he's a little bit passive.

"However, Pep Guardiola stressed that Bobb's ability to burst past defenders from a standing position is one-of-a-kind.

"But he has something unique.

Stop, being quiet, done in movement, first two or steps, right or left are unbelievable.

The goal itself, the action, he has done it, he's behind the ball and how he turns and makes the cross is a huge quality.

"The skill Pep Guardiola discussed was shown by Oscar Bobb against Man United As Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola rightly pointed out, Bobb was especially dangerous in one-v-one situations against Manchester United where he was in a standing position.

Against Lisandro Martinez on a few instances, the Oslo-born winger was able to dart past him using his quick feet.

In the first-half, Bobb roamed into a central position as well and managed to dribble past a few of United's players with ease.

The Premier League winner's footwork and close control was sublime at times against the Red Devils; a skill he can use in his favour to terrorise defenders in the upcoming campaign.

As Pep Guardiola stated, if Bobb can be more uninhibited in the final third, his game will hit new heights.
