Manchester City included a buy-back clause when they sold Micah Hamilton to Middlesbrough.
The 20-year-old became Boro's fifth signing of the 2024 summer transfer window on August 9th.
Middlesbrough signed Hamilton for PS3.
5m from Manchester City, with part of that sum understood to be made up of add-ons.
The versatile winger joins Luke Ayling, Delano Burgzorg, Aidan Morris, and Harley Hunt as new additions at the Riverside in the current window.
After moving to Boro, Hamilton took part in a Q&A with Middlesbrough, which included him revealing the best players he has played with and against in his career so far.
The Sky Blues' academy graduate has limited senior experience but a Manchester City expert thinks Hamilton can step up for Middlesbrough and become a regular starter at senior level.
The Englishman has also been compared to current City star Jeremy Doku, with big things now expected of him in the North East.
But as Hamilton clearly has a very high ceiling, Middlesbrough face the prospect of a bigger club coming in for him if he performs well on Teesside.
MORE BORO STORIESThe 22-year-old joined Middlesbrough from City's U21 team on July 7 2023, going on to score seven and assist nine in 33 games for Michael Carrick's side.
However, Aston Villa then came in and snapped up Rogers in January for an initial fee of PS8m, which will rise to PS16m with add-ons.
Should Hamilton also impress early in 2024/25, he too could be sold in January, with Man City themselves holding a buy-back clause.
Boro News spoke to transfer expert Graeme Bailey regarding this buy-back clause.
And while the exact figure is not known, it is understood the fee Middlesbrough sold Rogers for is a good indicator of how much City would have to pay to re-sign Hamilton.
He said: "Nobody knows exactly but told Morgan Rogers sale price is a good indication.
"This issue was particularly prominent in the late 2010s when Adam Traore, Ben Gibson, and Patrick Bamford were all sold.
It happened again in 2023 when Chuba Akpom joined Ajax after scoring 29 goals in one campaign.
While Boro have previously struggled to replace their best players, they have got much better at it since the arrival of Kieran Scott and Carrick.
The Akpom transfer was a perfect example of this, with Emmanuel Latte proving a great replacement for the now Ajax man.
As a result, Middlesbrough fans should not be too worried about Man City activating Hamilton's buy-back clause or another Premier League club coming in for him.
Boro look set to net a healthy sum from the winger's sale and with Scott now Head of Football, a replacement should be easy to find for the Teessiders.
