With the dawn of a new Premier League season just around the corner, here's what we learned from a Manchester Derby that kicked off proceedings for another long campaign ahead.

City show grit to break Community Shield hoodooAfter three consecutive Community Shield losses, Pep Guardiola's side managed to claim their first Shield triumph since 2019.

City were shocked by Leicester in 2021, losing 1-0, and were also pipped by Liverpool in their treble-winning season a year later.

2023 should have been their year, but once again City failed to capitalise on their dominance, falling short to Arsenal via penalties.

Despite their recent drought in the competition, a relatively new-look City side willed their way across the line against Erik ten Hag's men with Bernardo Silva equalising in the 89th minute to take the game to penalties.

The Citizens then showed poise to start their 2024-25 campaign on a winning note, winning 7-6 on penalties.

Ten Hag seems to have instilled a clear game planEven though Ten Hag's side were on the wrong end of the result, they arguably were the better team throughout the 90 minutes.

United had several clear-cut chances to increase their lead but the likes of Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay were unable to capitalise.

From the outset, the game plan was clear.

United would often try and suck City in for the press before often bypassing the midfield third through lofted balls.

This allowed United's attackers such as Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Alejandro Garnacho to run at their man with space in behind.

With Joshua Zirkzee yet to feature and Rasmus Hojlund to also come back into the fray, Ten Hag has a plethora of options to be able to play this direct, transitional style that now looks to be better honed.

Stars fail to deliverAlthough the Community Shield final is still technically a warm-up for the new season, stars from both sides of Manchester underperformed in front of a strong Wembley crowd.

More Football FootballErling Haaland is Manchester City's premier goal scorer but after going goalless in the final, the imposing No.

9 has now been unable to score in all five Wembley games he has been a part of.

Often the criticism with Haaland is the big Norwegian doesn't affect the game unless he's scoring which can again be argued as he only managed 18 touches and zero shots at goal in 90 minutes of play.

For United, Rashford also seemed to be lacking in confidence.

The 26-year-old saw three big chances fall to his feet but fired wide of the mark each time.

Rashford at his best has shown to be capable of a 20-goal season but the other side of the coin is the stark opposite with the forward only managing eight goals last season from 43 games.

If either team is to play at maximum capacity, these forwards have to be in form and firing.

Oscar Bobb and Alejandro Garnacho star as the youth steal the showFor Manchester City, key cogs such as Rodri and Phil Foden were still missing due to a long Euro 2024 campaign which handed golden opportunities to youngsters Oscar Bobb, James McAtee, Rico Lewis, and new signing 20-year-old Savinho from Girona.

City's youngsters were solid for Guardiola but the standout was the emergence of winger Bobb.

The Norwegian broke into Guardiola's first team last season and has just seemingly picked up where he left off, impressing in pre-season and now in the Community Shield.

With City on the verge of losing yet another Shield final, it was Bobb who came up with a piece of magic, turning sharply past his marker and perfectly floating a ball that found the head of a determined Silva.

Expect this emerging star to be a genuine option Guardiola turns to from the bench when the Premier League kicks underway.

There's not much to say about Argentine wonderkid Garnacho once again showed his class on a big stage.

The academy graduate seemed to have won United another trophy over City but the Red Devils were unable to hold on.

Having played 36 games in United's campaign last season, Garnacho is now a lock for Ten Hag going forward and is looking sharp again ahead of the new season.
