Ederson lets slip Pep Guardiola's true character after confirming his Man City stay
Source:The Mirror:

The Brazilian shot stopper will remain as Pep Guardiola's number one at the Etihad for the upcoming season, and has revealed his managers true colours Ederson has thanked Pep Guardiola for persuading him to remain at Manchester City this season.

But this has come as something of a shock after the Spanish manager publicly stated he'd be willing to let the 30-year-old decide his own future and depart the club if he wished.

Ederson has an incredibly capable understudy working with him at the Etihad in Stefan Ortega, and it was revealed this summer that if a suitable offer came in, namely from Saudi Pro League clubs who reportedly held interest, Guardiola would not stand in the Brazilian's way.

Yet, after saving Jadon Sancho's spot kick and scoring one himself in the Community Shield, Ederson put all rumours to bed, stating that he'll not be leaving the Premier League this summer.

And it came after private conversations with Guardiola.

"I spoke to Pep, and it was crucial.

I'm happy to stay and fully focused on winning more titles here.

I also spoke to the board, directors, and teammates, and I'm staying.

"Ederson took centre stage at Wembley ( Image:Rumours of big-money contracts being offered and even City demanding PS50million for their number one goalkeeper forced Guardiola to comment on the speculation.

"I don't know - he has to see maybe now other options," said the Spaniard.

"Of course, I'd like him to stay.

It depends now on the clubs.

I don't know the situation.

"No contact in the last days.

A question of training and being with us until the transfer window finishes and we will see what happens.

"Guardiola played a vital part in convincing Ederson to stay ( Image:Nigel Keene/ProSports/REX/Shutterstock) Compare this statement with the one Guardiola issued when discussing Kevin De Bruyne's prospective move to Saudi Arabia or the MLS - "Kevin isn't leaving" - and it seems clear that the Man City boss was reluctantly acceptant of Ederson's departure, should he have wished.

The current number two, Ortega, also saw his City contract extended by another year this June.

Director of football Txiki Begiristain stressed the German's importance upon signing a new deal and made it evident that he'd be next in line should Ederson leave.

"This is a crucial contract extension for Manchester City.

Stefan is the best number two goalkeeper we've ever had," Begiristain stated.

"He's provided us with quality, stability and experience.

He is very skilled, and it's clear that since his arrival here, he has contributed significantly to our success.

"However, Ederson has now stated that he'll remain in sky blue for the club's next title charge, revealing Guardiola's true colours and his change of tune from allowing the player to seek other options to being a crucial part of his decision to stay.
