Manchester City Claim Community Shield
Source:Bitter and

Manchester City showed they can finally take penalties (Bernardo Silva aside) as the Blues beat Manchester United to claim the Community Shield. Manuel Akanji scored the final spot-kick to ensure City avoided a fourth consecutive defeat in the season curtain raiser at Wembley. Alejandro Garnacho had given United the lead with eight minutes remaining, only for Silva to level in the last minute.

In a game of few chances where both teams hit the post, it was always destined to come down to penalties. And, with City playing a fairly youthful side against an experienced United side, a draw was better suited for the Blues than their opponents.

City left Kevin de Bruyne, Nathan Ake, Matheus Nunes and Silva on the bench, with Jack Grealish and Phil Foden not in the squad and Julian Alvarez on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid. However, the Blues held their own, with James McAtee impressing in the middle. And it was the youngster who almost opened the scoring in the first half, as his curling effort slammed against the post and bounced away to safety.

United had chances too, but Marcus Rashford was wasteful in front of goal and also hit the same post with 12 minutes remaining when it seemed easier to score. But the Reds took the lead, with Garnacho sneaking a shot past Ederson in the 82nd minute.

United looked to be holding on to condemn the Blues to another Community Shield defeat, but you can never write City off. The impressive Oscar Bobb, who may be in line for a lot more game time this season, spun past the United defence and delivered a brilliant cross, which was met by the head of Silva to draw City level.

That was it in terms of goals and penalties ensued, with Silva missing the first of City's spot-kicks. The next four were all scored but, with United 3-2 up, Ederson pulled off a good save from Jadon Sancho's penalty and new signing Savinho levelled the shoot-out at 3-3. Both teams continued to score into sudden death but, at 6-6, Jonny Evans fired his penalty over the bar to give City the advantage.

It was down to Akanji to win it for the Blues and he dispatched his spot-kick perfectly to bring to shield to Manchester.

Final Score: Manchester City 1-1 Manchester United (City win 7-6 on penalties).
