'Maybe': Pep Guardiola says Man City might've made a transfer 'mistake' this summer
Source:Manchester City

If Pep Guardiola intends to leave Manchester City after his contract expires next summer, he will be especially be hoping to have his best possible season at the club.

Even for a team of City's ilk, it will be difficult for them to replicate their treble-winning season.

But even if Guardiola has privately intended to extend his contract, his ambitions of making more history in England would remain sky-high.

Pep Guardiola confirmed Manchester City's deadline day plans by agreeing to the fact that they will have a "quiet" day.

The PS378,846-a-week man's response was short and sweet - implying that the club have already internally discussed their plans for Friday's deadline day.

It seems like Manchester City's main priority remains their upcoming clash against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Guardiola mentions Man City's potential transfer "mistake" in latest press conference How their decision not to add any more players to their squad barring Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan will age is set to be intriguing.

Even clubs of Manchester City's standing in the game can make the odd mistake.

But more often than not, City's assessment of their squad and Pep Guardiola's ability to lead them over the line tends to be spot on.

For instance, in the 2018/2019 season, the Sky Blues had only brought Riyad Mahrez in from Leicester City; a decision that could be viewed as unambitious to have only signed one player.

But the Sky Blues' conviction in the Algerian being their only summer signing panned out well to say the least as they won the domestic treble during that campaign.

Pep Guardiola was quizzed about why Manchester City did not sign a replacement for Julian Alvarez.

The PS378,846-a-week man responded via HaytersTV: "I'm happy with the squad.

So, we didn't expect Julian [Alvarez] was leaving.

Well, expect, I don't know because he had conversations for a long time with clubs, his agent, so could happen but at the end, you always think maybe he's going to stay.

""But it didn't happen and after, we saw what we have.

Of course, you have many, many injuries, it would be a problem but hopefully, in two, three months, it's back Oscar [Bobb] and Phil [Foden] is in that position and [James] McAtee can play in that position, [Ilkay] Gundogan can play in that position, Bernardo [Silva] can play in that position.

""Of course, different type of players to Erling [Haaland], of course.

"Pep Guardiola admitted that there could be a possibility that the decision not to replace Alvarez could be a mistake from Manchester City.

"So, maybe it's a mistake, I don't know but I like to work with not a long, long, long squad.

I don't like to leave a lot of players without playing for a long, long time.

"However, Guardiola revealed that he prefers to have a relatively small squad.

"And when you have a long squad with no injuries, that's a month without playing and I don't like it.

And always I feel, when everybody's involved with a chance to play, the performance of the team is always better.

""That's why I prefer, I know the group, I know how incredibly serious and professional they are and commitment in every single game and yeah, we decide to go.

"The Catalan concluded: "You are right, when you are not pretty, pretty, pretty sure, it's better [to] wait.

In winter, we have another chance so if I'm not convinced and Txiki's [Begiristain] not convinced, it's better to not take that step.

"Pep Guardiola makes fair point about not signing Julian Alvarez replacement As Pep Guardiola claimed, unless him or Txiki Begiristain is convinced about signing a player, it is futile to bring in a fresh face.

Guardiola also revealed that if a club lacks conviction about a potential transfer target's suitability to the side, it is best to wait.

The Manchester City boss also seemingly realises that by adding more players, his squad depth will increase but so will the discontent faces in the dressing room due to a possible lack of game time.

But Pep Guardiola is open to the realisation that the club's decision could end up being an error in their judgement and in that case, they will considering mending their mistake in the January transfer window.

For the time being, Guardiola claimed he trusts the make-up as well as the mentality of his current squad.

With the Spaniard also naming Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb, Ilkay Gundogan, James McAtee and Bernardo Silva as potential understudies to Erling Haaland, he has a clear idea of how to set his side up in the Norwegian's absence.
