Ilkay Gundogan has reacted to Victor Osimhen's shock transfer to Galatasaray. The 25-year-old striker was heavily linked moves to the Premier League and the Saudi Pro League for much of the summer, but a switch collapsed after failing to agree personal terms with Chelsea and Al-Ahli.
In a desperate effort to find a new club before the summer window slammed shut, Osimhen joined the reigning Turkish top-flight champions on a season-long loan. It's said that Galatasaray agreed to pay the Nigeria international's eye-watering salary, worth around EUR210,000 (PS176,000) a week, in full in return for no loan fee.
Osimhen touched down in in Istanbul in the early hours of Tuesday morning after completing his medical, and he was given a warm welcome by supporters. Fabrizio Romano announced the deal on Instagram, which caught Gundogan's attention.
Under the journalist's post, the Manchester City midfielder commented Osimhen's move. He saud: "Wow... Crazy [Shocked face emoji, Nigeria flag emoji, lion emoji, yellow and red circle emoji]."
According to Turkish outlet A Spor, as quoted by the Metro, Osimhen negotiated a break clause in his deal with Galatasaray, granting him the freedom to terminate the loan in January if Napoli receive a bid from one of 10 unnamed clubs. A report from Turkish journalist Kagan Dursun claims Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are among the teams on his shortlist.
While Galatasaray bagged Osimhen, City opted against directly replacing Julian Alvarez. The 24-year-old forward joined Atletico Madrid earlier this summer in search of greater first-team opportunities after playing second-fiddle to Erling Haaland.
The Premier League champions signed Divin Mubama following the expiration of his contract at West Ham, although he's expected to feature for the Elite Development Squad. The Manchester Evening News understands that the 19-year-old striker was offered a contract extension at the London Stadium, but he chose to run down his deal - meaning the Hammers were entitled to training compensation as per FA rules for homegrown players.
Speaking to reporters before the international break, Pep Guardiola conceded that City took a gamble by not replacing Alvarez. The Spaniard said: "I'm happy with the squad.
"We didn't expect Julian was leaving, although he had conversations a long time ago with other clubs and his agent, so it could happen and in the end it happened. We saw what we have.
"If we have many, many injuries it will be a problem, but in a few months Oscar Bobb will be back (from injury) and Phil [Foden] is in that position, [James] McAtee can play in that position, Gundogan can play in that position, Bernardo [Silva]...
"They are different players to Erling of course. Maybe it is a mistake, I don't know but I don't like leaving players without playing for a long time. When everyone is involved with a chance to play the performance of the teams is always better.
"I know the group and how serious and professional they are and their commitment in every single game. We are pretty sure it is better to wait."
