Lee Carsley to experiment with new player in problematic England position
Source:Live Radio,

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis is in line to make only his second senior England start when Finland visit Wembley, talkSPORT understands.

However, the 19-year-old is set to be played in a less familiar left-back role in Tuesday night's game.

It is understood Declan Rice will play with the Arsenal midfielder suspended for their north London derby clash against Tottenham on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Morgan Gibbs-White is hoping for more minutes after coming on in the 77th minute at the Aviva Stadium.

Kieran Trippier was often used at left-back during Gareth Southgate's reign but the Newcastle defender has since retired from international football.

Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill was deployed at left-back during Carsley's first match as interim boss.

Colwill was handed a 6/10 in talkSPORT host Adrian Durham's player ratings as he failed to fully convince in the role.

While Lewis is a right-back by trade, the teenager has previously played left-back at club level, while Carsley has also been known to favour an inverted full-back.

During his 2023 Under-21 European Championship success, he played Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons on the left side.

England made an electric start to Carsley's reign with two early goals against Ireland from Declan Rice and Jack Grealish, before taking their foot off the gas.

"I still want to see us playing with that control," Carsley said. "I think it's important that we're exciting to watch.

"I think when fans come watch England play at home they expect attacking football, they expect chances to be created and to play with a tempo and us to be on the ball.

He added: "Really looking forward to the game. We've had another couple of good sessions (since) the last match, so I'm excited by it.

"We'll make two or three changes, freshen the team up a little bit.

"But what I've noticed with this group is how motivated they are to do well.
