Manchester City record victory over improving West Ham United

Manchester City recorded a 2-0 victory over a well-drilled West Ham United side at The Joie Stadium this afternoon. Lauren Hemp fired the hosts ahead early in the first half before a Mary Fowler goal 19 minutes from time made sure of the victory for Gareth Taylor's side.

West Ham United had the ball in the net after two minutes through Viviane Asseyi, however, the lineswoman's flag was already up for offside.

The Hammers started with good structure, however, they were caught out in the 10th minute when a ball eventually landed at Hemp's feet and she fired home from 10 yards.

Jill Roord then failed to make it two when she was put through on goal before the same player saw a low shot cleared off the line.

West Ham United tried to create opportunities on the break but they were unable to trouble home keeper Ayaka Yamashita as the first half ended 1-0 in Manchester City's favour.

Hemp was arguably the most dangerous player on the pitch in the first half and she had two great opportunities to score early in the second period. First, she fired an effort from 20 yards against the crossbar before ballooning a shot high and wide from close range moments later.

At the other end, a floated ball into the box found Asseyi but she was unable to direct a header either side of Yamashita.

Just before the hour, Hemp had another good opportunity to score. All she had to do was head the ball home but visiting keeper Kinga Szemik produced a wonderful quick-reaction save.

Manchester City made sure of the victory 19 minutes from time when Shelina Zadorsky lost possession and Khadija Shaw crossed for Fowler who headed in.

The Cityzens had further chances to add to their lead. Leila Ouahabi saw a venomous shot rattle the crossbar before Szemik pushed an Alex Greenwood free-kick around the post as the game ended 2-0.

Manchester City are back in action on Wednesday evening when they play host to FC Barcelona in the UEFA Women's Champions League group stage while West Ham United's next match is at Everton on Sunday.
