Ally McCoist hails ‘remarkable’ player's ‘fantastic decision’ to leave Man City

Previous transfer windows have seen Manchester City cash in on multiple players whilst also bringing new faces to the club.

Despite the hefty number of changes that have been made to City's squad in recent memory, Pep Guardiola has still been able to see his side maintain their top-flight dominance by becoming the first side to win four consecutive Premier League trophies.

So far this season, City have gone unbeaten across all competitions whilst dealing with some significant injury issues.

Now though, a pundit has heaped praise on one of the players who has waved goodbye to the Etihad Stadium in recent years.

He said: "It would have been easy for him to sit at Manchester City, it'd have been easy for him to come on every 20 minutes every game or get one start in four.

"And he went, 'No, that's not for me. I'll tell you what I'm going to do, I'm going to move to Chelsea, I'm going to play every week and I'm going to take my own game as far as it can possibly go.'

"And boy has that proved to have been a success. Yes, there's an argument you can say if he stayed at City he'd have won a title, he might do this, he might do that.

"But no, he's taken control of his own destination and in this moment in time it looks to be a fantastic decision from his and Chelsea's point of view. His goalscoring return, for example, has been absolutely remarkable."

Chelsea's sporting director shed light on Palmer's exit from City After working his way through City's youth academy to become a fringe player in Guardiola's senior ranks, Palmer joined Chelsea in the 2023 summer transfer window in a deal worth PS42.5m (via BBC Sport).

Since then, the 22-year-old has scored 32 goals and provided 20 assists in 56 matches across all competitions.

Earlier this month, one of the West London club's sporting directors, Paul Winstanley, shed some light on how Palmer's move from City to Chelsea came about, saying this on the matter.

He said: "He'd consistently flagged up on the profile of player that we were looking for in that position, but as we headed through the window, when you check in and you get told 'no, not for sale, not for sale'.

"We weren't going to get him on loan and that wouldn't have suited us, either. We would have always preferred a permanent deal with someone like Cole.

"Then you enter a period when all of a sudden there's a sense this might have some legs, let's push, let's go. And then once you set off on that journey, you've got to try to see it through if there's a chance.

"And, to be fair to Cole, he showed great desire to come here and that's the sort of player we want, the personality and the desire to come here."

Now that McCoist has hailed Palmer for taking a gamble and securing a move away from City, there can be no denying that this gamble has certainly paid off for him and his new club.

Even though City made a significant profit from him as one of their youth players, it'll be interesting to know if there is some sort of regret about Palmer's exit from their perspective.
