'Of course': Pep Guardiola's bold prediction about points total needed to win the Premier League this season
Source:Manchester City

It's safe to say that Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's foresight when it comes to Premier League title races is second to none.

With only Sir Alex Ferguson's tally of 13 titles more than Guardiola's (six) in Premier League history, the latter has experienced every kind of fight for domestic glory.

Unlike Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot at Arsenal and Liverpool respectively as well, the Manchester City legend has experience of winning multiple Premier League titles.

Slot won the Eredivisie in 2023 and that is the sole league title he has won in his career.

As for Arteta, the FA Cup is the only trophy he has to show for despite all the terrific work he has done at the Emirates Stadium.

Manchester City's ultimate X-factor over both Arsenal and Liverpool in the three-horse race for the title could well prove to Pep Guardiola's invaluable experience.

Pep Guardiola says a lower points tally will decide Premier League title winner So far, Liverpool have been the standout team in the English top-flight, topping the league table while conceding the least (six) and scoring the third-most goals (19) behind City (21) and Chelsea (20) this season.

Arsenal and the Sky Blues are seven and two points respectively off the league leaders in what already looks like a title race that could go down to the wire based on how closely-matched all three teams are.

Pep Guardiola was quizzed about whether a lower points tally than usual could seal the league title for a team this season, with the reporter asking via HaytersTV: "Do you feel that with so many games for top sides this season, it's going to be a lower points tally for teams to win the title this season?"

The Catalan briefly replied: "Of course, of course, absolutely."

Pep Guardiola went on to discuss how strenuous the fixture schedule is for his Manchester City side: "If we had five more days to recover, maybe, we would have been better [against Bournemouth] or maybe not, who knows that? I don't want to put the [statement] now about the calendar, my argument for the calendar, for many things during the season was when we were winning."

"[It] Looks like now because we lost a game, so the reality is they [Bournemouth] won, congratulate them. The reality we're living now, we lived in the past, previous seasons, play a lot of games."

Guardiola added: "Maybe we go to the [FIFA Club] World Cup, arrive in the last stages of the competitions, we are going to play more than 70 games. 70 games is like the NBA, NBA has four months holidays, we have more than three weeks."

"Because it's not this season, it comes from previous seasons and when that happens, you have injuries, didn't happen before, [to] some of them. But it's inevitable, it's normal, it's going to happen so just to handle it and be perfect in terms of the amount of training sessions we have to do to arrive as well as possible to the game."

How many points Man City are on course to get this season? Currently, Manchester City have 23 points while Liverpool and Arsenal have 25 and 18 respectively.

TEAMS POINTS PER GAME AFTER 10 GAMES PROJECTED POINT TOTAL AFTER 38 GAMES LIVERPOOL 2.5 95 MAN CITY 2.3 87 ARSENAL 1.8 68 Based on the projected points total at the end of the season, the Reds will win the league by eight points.

However, that is assuming that Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool continue to operate at the same rate until the end of the season.

Points Premier League winners needed to win the title post-Guardiola at Man City Since Pep Guardiola was appointed by Manchester City in 2016, it would be interesting to take a look at the points total needed by teams to win the title ever since he came to England.

PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON TITLE WINNER POINTS TOTAL 2016/2017 CHELSEA 93 2017/2018 MAN CITY 100 2018/2019 MAN CITY 98 2019/2020 LIVERPOOL 99 2020/2021 MAN CITY 86 2021/2022 MAN CITY 93 2022/2023 MAN CITY 89 2023/2024 MAN CITY 91 Apart from when City won the league in 2021 and 2023, all the title-winning sides since 2016 have required more than 90 points to become the champions of England.

With that being the case, Pep Guardiola's prediction could be considered rather bold.

Last season, City won the league with 91 points.

Considering Guardiola expects the eventual title winner, which possibly could be his Sky Blues side to accrue lesser points, his team should feel confident as they have shown they are well-capable of chasing down such a target in the past.
