Ex-Tottenham ace tells Postecoglou to play U23s instead of struggling £30m trio

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O'Hara believes Ange Postecoglou should give chances to a couple of budding youngsters rather than recall Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Now, you can see O'Hara's point.

If Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg weren't good enough before, then why would they be now? Parachuted back into Ange Postecoglou's XI due to the absences of Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison away at Wolves, all three played a part as Wolves turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win in stoppage time, chasing shadows as Pablo Sarabia scored the equaliser and set up Mario Lemina's clincher.

O'Hara, speaking to talkSPORT (13 November, 11am), believes Postecoglou would have been better served looking to the future rather than harking back to Spurs' underwhelming past.

"The manager has to make a stance. (Postecoglou should say) 'if I lose a couple of players, I need to try something more new'. (Try out) a couple of lads from the under 23s. If you go back to the same players, Dier and Davies, you get the same result.

"I would rather lose against Wolves with some U23 player, and saying 'you know what, he's half decent'. (Postecoglou) went safe. He played Hojbjerg, Dier and Davies."

Some big departures are coming Now, if we are playing devils' advocate, we'd argue that throwing a couple of untested up-and-comers into the XI - away at Molineux and in place of some of Spurs' star men - is asking for trouble.

Still, neither Dier nor Hojbjerg in particular did little in a rare start to suggest that they can play a key role in Postecoglou's rebuild, the drop-off from Romero and Maddison standing out a mile.
