’99% guaranteed’… Fabrizio Romano says 27-year-old Man City player is ‘going to leave’ in January

Fabrizio Romano has said that there is a 99% chance that Kalvin Phillips will leave Manchester City in the upcoming January transfer window.

The midfielder was linked with a move to Newcastle United during the previous summer transfer window, although ended up staying at the Etihad Stadium with the hope of fighting for a place in Pep Guardiola's side.

Now though, after Phillips suggested that he could look to move away from the Manchester club in January to try and get more playing time, Romano has shared some behind-the-scenes details on this particular situation.

He said: "It's not about getting closer but it is a name they're considering. Kalvin Phillips is going to leave Manchester City in January, this is the clear direction of the deal, this is 99% guaranteed.

"He wants to play and so this is why, also looking for the Euros, the player is looking at options around Europe and especially around England also to be adapted very fast to the new club and Newcastle could be a possibility."

The Citizens signed the Englishman from Leeds United back in the 2022 summer transfer window in a deal worth PS45m.

Since then, the 27-year-old has only made 29 appearances for the club in all competitions, starting just five of them.

With that in mind, it's clear that Phillips has failed to make himself a regular figure in City's team, making it easy to see why Romano thinks he could be on his way out of the club in January to try and get regular minutes elsewhere.

Moving forward, once the winter transfer window opens, if a suitable offer for Phillips comes their way, it'll be interesting to see if the Manchester club then dip into the market to bring in a replacement for the Englishman.
