Stripped of titles and forcibly relegated - City told to expect FFP punishment

Manchester City have been told to expect significant punishment if they are found guilty of the Financial Fair Play charges levelled against them - including possibly being forcibly relegated from the Premier League.

Fellow Premier League club Everton were deducted 10 points by the league last week after being found guilty of breaching financial rules. It was a record sanction imposed on a Premier League club.

City themselves have been subject to investigation by both the Premier League and UEFA in recent years, with the Etihad outfit having been charged earlier this year with an alleged 115 breaches of FFP rules. The charges cover a nine-year period between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

Following a four-year investigation into the club, which had been delayed by legal challenges, the league announced that the alleged breaches had been referred to a commission, with City facing a range of possible punishments if found guilty.

And following Everton's shock outcome, more than 8,000 football supporters across the MEN and its sister titles, had their say, with 67 per cent believing City will eventually be punished for FFP-related charges.

Fans were then asked what the punishment should be for the club should this happen, with 41 per cent saying that they should also receive a points deduction. However, 36 per cent think that they should be forcibly relegated from the Premier League, with 23 per cent believing that the club should be stripped of its titles.

Supporters across the country appeared to be split on whether they thought Everton's punishment was acceptable, as just 51 per cent agreed with 49 per cent thinking it was unfair.

The Toffees' ten-point deduction also sees them slip back into the Premier League's relegation places but fans were still confident of their survival this season with 74 per cent thinking that they will stay up.

When asked about the league's Financial Fair Play rules as a whole, over half of fans (57%) agreed with them, with 17 per cent disagreeing. Interestingly, the remaining 26 per cent stated that whilst they did agree with the rules in principle, they thought that the current set are too harsh on clubs.

City recently commented on the ongoing investigation into their finances in their annual report. The report states: "On 6 February 2023, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League referred a number of alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules by Manchester City Football Club to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4.

"In February 2023, in response to the charges, the Club issued a public statement that it welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position."
