‘It's just wrong’: Michael Owen says Man United youngster is showing £85m Liverpool ace how it's done

Michael Owen has compared the weekend goals scored by Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund and Liverpool's Darwin Nunez.

Both players were put through on goal during their respective games, Jurgen Klopp's side beat Brentford 4-1, whilst Manchester United narrowly beat Luton Town.

Liverpool's all-action forward decided to audaciously chip the goalkeeper to open the scoring, whereas Rasmus Hojlund opted to go around the keeper before slotting it into the back of the net.

Michael Owen was left amazed by Darwin Nunez's 'incredible' finish for Liverpool, but made it clear that his rival at Old Trafford is doing it better, as he told Premier League Productions (19/02/24 at 10:50 pm).

The former England hitman is looking at percentages and thinks Rasmus Hojlund's choice of finish is 'much more efficient' than Liverpool's PS85 million star in the long term.

Ever since Darwin Nunez entered the Premier League stage, he has showcased a rawness to his game and has been deemed a chaotic player.

At times, it seems as though he can do the very difficult things easier than the very simple things, but of course, with age and experience, he will grow and become better.

As of this moment, Michael Owen feels Manchester United's red-hot forward is now showing him how it should be done, as was proven by their weekend goals.

Rasmus Hojlund v Darwin Nunez "It's very similar," said Owen about the build-up to Hojlund's goal compared to Nunez's. "A long punt or clearance, just like the Liverpool goal. Exactly the same position now. Everything is the same, isn't it?!

"What does he (Hojlund) do? In fact, it's probably easier to chip the goalkeeper from here (in comparison to Nunez's). He has got another four or five yards to get the ball up and down, so it's the easier finish but still not the right finish.

"But what does he do? Much more efficiently. He goes around the goalkeeper, that's what I am saying. That finish, whether you like slotting, dinking or going around like that. In the long term, you are going to score far more goals doing the right percentage finish each time and that's what Hojlund has just done.

"There are no rights or wrongs in finishing in many ways. Apart from the Nunez one, it's just wrong in many ways. You just can't do that and score big numbers. It's just incredible."

It could also be argued that the Uruguayan star is in a much more stable environment and has more reliable goalscorers around him, whilst Hojlund has the opposite of that.

Despite that, the 21-year-old, after going months without a Premier League goal, now has seven goals to his name and two assists in 1,474 minutes of football.

In comparison, Nunez has nine goals and seven assists from 1,466 minutes of league football, including a stunning winner at St James' Park in August.
