'He was the best': Wayne Rooney says Man United had a manager who was better tactically than Sir Alex Ferguson

Wayne Rooney has now claimed that one Manchester United manager was more tactically astute than Sir Alex Ferguson in the past.

Rooney, who made 559 appearances for Man United, scoring 253 goals, actually played under five different managers at Old Trafford.

After joining in 2004, Rooney then left in 2017 during Mourinho's tenure, when he headed back to his boyhood club, Everton.

Of course, it may be a surprise to hear Rooney claim that any manager was superior to Ferguson in any way, after all, the England striker had a lot more success under the Scot.

However, when speaking on 'Stick to Football', Rooney claimed that one of those Man United managers was actually better tactically than Ferguson.

The former striker claimed that Louis van Gaal, even if he struggled to capture the players off of the pitch, was extremely astute with his tactics.

MORE MANCHESTER UNITED STORIES

Rooney recalled that van Gaal asked him to play a slightly different role than Ferguson, one that required the United striker to get much more involved in play.

Wayne Rooney says Louis van Gaal was better tactically than Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United Speaking on the podcast, Rooney said: "If I was more selfish I potentially could have scored a lot more goals. But I just wanted to play.

"The amount of times I had midfielders telling me to go away, Sir Alex would say to me you need to stay up front.

"But I remember him coming in and saying he wants his centre forward to have 15 or 20 touches a game."

Of course, those words still might surprise one or two United fans, especially considering van Gaal only won a solitary FA Cup during his time with the club.

But perhaps in the same breath Rooney would insist that Ferguson was a much better man manager at Man United.

All that being said, it seems as if Erik ten Hag is getting the balance right with one of United's forwards at the moment.

And given his strong form, Gary Lineker has now been discussing how much he loves Rasmus Hojlund.
